My mare became a little foot-sore over a week ago, she has always been unshod and it is not uncommon on rough ground, it was only slight and not constant everytime the hoof touched the ground. She saw the farrier a couple of days later for her usual trim and he said she had 'gravel' and some of her hoof was being pushed away at the base.

He has trimmed this off and cur away some of her hoof, told us to keep it clean where possible after riding etc but she is still on and off unsound/footsore I assume where he has cut away the outer wall of her hoof. Its a front so a weight bearing one and she's a big heavy girl.

I'm wondering what to do for her to help her, she walks sound inthe field but is footsore on rough ground in the yard. She trots up slightly lame on that front on the grass. It is not bad but if there is anything I can do to help her I will??

She is fed biotin and we use hoof hardener, what else canI do it will take a while for her outer wall to grow back to support her hoof??

Many thanks for any help.

Farrier said just to keep foot picked out/clean as much as poss and she would be ok but she's slightly sore on it.

Ideally dont want to shoe the mare her feet are super most of the time its just been wet this summer and she's had this small problem, she's 6 and always been unshod and never had any other probs so dont want to shoe just cos of one issue.

I had to use Keratex hoof putty to plug my mare's "gravel track" (as the vet called it - she went very lame and had to be seen by vet). It developed into something resembling seedy toe as the cavity got larger and she developed more solar flare (feet needed to be trimmed more regulasrly to prevent this as it stretched the white line slightly and made the cavity larger when her hoof wall got too long) - and it needed really thorough cleaning and obviously I didn't quite manage to get it all out. I had to put her on Formula 4 Feet to accelerate her hoof growth (she'd always been on biotin before anyway but F4F worked a million times better), and it took six to nine months to grow out. She could then be shod in front and when my farrier removes her shoes she has lovely solid hooves

Cornucrescine was something else I used, rubbed into the coronet band to help the cavity grow out.

so do you mean she has a gravel run? pick her feet really well then wash it out with idion scrub then either let her where boots her get her shot on the front but of course make sure she has no gravel before you stick a shoe on the top!

The farrier just called it gravel, I've had a look at the keratex hoof putty looks like it will be ideal and do just the job, there is no infection the farrier states it is all out, just the part where the hoof wall hasbeencut away exposing the inner hoof which is sensitive.

I'm also going to get some hoof disinfectant to try before putting the hoof putty on.

She has Old Mac G2s so will wear these too if she can be ridden but will see how she goes first. Thanks all
