I really want to find a good sized suitable 4 horses field to rent, all year round, perhaps reviewed annually that charlie can live on so that I can then invite someone else to keep their horse/pony on so that he has company( perhaps 2 depending on field etc)
I would pay in one or two lump sums for the year and look after the field and as my partner is good with a tractor+can fence/hedge this would be easy :)
How should I go about trying to find a place near us?write letters, visit, phone up?
If u had a field to rent would this sound ok to you. I.e me renting+then asking for company for mine.
Should the other owners pay me or should I get them to pay direct to the landowner?
What do you think? Good idea or not?
Thanks in advance :)

As pony is on his own atm, hopefully moving him soon to a small paddock with 3 horses right next door(only fence inbetween) which is great BUT don't know how long they will be there+then I'm back to square one so want to find a permanent solution. I would buy a lil miniature but don't think I'm allowed (will have to talk him round :D :p )

I suspect the landowner won't want to deal with more than one person. They will probably want a decent rent as they might not be able to get SFP on the field as horses are non agricultural and also are not brilliant for the land compared with the easier option of sheep or cattle seasonal rental.

However fencing is labour intensive so offering to do that (ESP with something that would also be suitable for sheep or cattle) might be quite tempting for them. Also if they produce things you might want eg hay, or be able to make use of a muck heap that will help.

You might want to ask on a few farming forums (British farming forum, the farming forum) and they will also be able to give you more idea about rental costs, (tho be prepared for a bit of anti horsey comments as some members have not had great experiences of us horsey types,)

I would send a flier to local farms and then pop in to follow up, not on a Sunday tho.

Ok thank you for that, good advice :) if I did find a field to rent and then had one or two others on it+they paid me would this be legal? They would share with mine no separation.

Anything would be legal, it would just be a question of the landowner agreeing to having other horses than yours on there, it would need their agreement. They might want to specify a maximum total of horses on the field at any one time, but might not care who had what, or they might say only x horses per person. They might also specify that part of the field had to be rested. Or they might not care, take the money and tell you to get on with it :-))

Bear in mind if the other livery legged it you would still be responsible for the whole rent to the landowner, but that would mean your rules ruled.

I rent a field and have had others ask me if they can share. I've nothing against this but feel I owe it to the landowner to take the best care of the field that I can so don't want to risk other people's ponies wrecking fencing, overgrazing, riders disrespecting the place plus I don't know how he would feel about me subletting. If you decide to share the land make it clear from the start and ask how they would rather be paid
