Grazing land , how much?

Hi, I have been thinking about renting a small piece of land for my horse near my home. I am meeting the lady tomorrow and she has asked me what I am prepared to offer for rental. I have absolutely no idea. I have looked at a thread here but it certainly seems to vary from area to area. This land is around an acre with no running water or electricity or shelter, I will have to erect a stable and probably secure it better with some decent fencing. There will be some pretty hefty outgoings to start with, but to get my boy almost on my doorstep and me looking after him with no livery yard intervention is worth every penny. So any suggestions? I am in the Southeast of England. Thanks very much

I think it depends where in SE. Nr guildford 3 acres was about £50 week, in rural east Sussex similar plot about £400 / year !

About £10 a week if its just your horse, maybe £15 if its your horse and a small companion - but I wouldn't be expecting to have to fence the place myself (unless you are just talking electric fencing). If you are providing more substantial fencing (ie post and rail that wouldn't leave when you did) then I'd expect the cost to be taken off the rental.

£150 per acre per year round my way, so £600 per year for 4 acres for example. Facilities vary from farmer to farmer...

But one acre isn't nearly enough for more than one horse unless it's VERY well drained and they spent a significant amount of time inside.

are you going to be keeping him on his own?

I don't think an acre is enough for one let alone 2 and would not keep one entirely on its own unless there are horses in adjoining fields

if OP is planning on feeding supplementry feeds and is prepared to look after and manage the plot 1 acre should be manageable, I thought the 1 acre/horse thing was for grazing. if it purely for leg stretch and additional forage is provided 1 acre is fine. I am sure in a perfect world they would have a bigger plot but it isnt ! my pony has a 2 acre field which I use about 1/3 of by the time he has a track in summer and a biggish trash area in winter which protects his track.
