Well the ned has gone out for the first day this year with the grazing muzzle. The new field has grass about 8 - 10 inches long, so hopefully he will get the hang of it and be able to eat enough to not go hungry!

Now to wait and deal with the rubbing, him working out how to get it off, and the feeling of meanyness I get everytime I see him in it (but its got to be better than staying in most of the day!)

1 comment I had when my pony had one was "Why is that horse wearing a snorkel!"

Mine had one last week for, erm, all of three days. On day three he apparently (I didn't turn him out) went ballistic in his stable when they put it on, and when I got up to the yard in the afternoon, the muzzle was in the middle of the field, broken.

We have so much grass in the summer fields that I won't be able to turn out 24/7 for ages, sadly.
I hope your horse is more accommodating than mine

Good for you to use them, they have been a godsend to me and my pones! Grass consumption is halved, so they can still eat/drink plenty. Don't feel guilty, he will get used to it. In three years mine have only broken a couple and the shetland has never got his off; the other one just a handful of times.

It was my girls first day in her's also - our grass is also about 10 inches long, field is absolutely huge (must be at least 10 acres) with only 3 in it!! We are not allowed to use an electric fence to corner off a section so had to resort to this

. As you say, much better than keeping them in 24/7! Needless to say she was not impressed and I felt very mean - on the plus side at least she wont get sunburnt on her appaloosa bits

I'm watching one of ours like a hawk to see if he's going to need a muzzle on again this year. So far we've not got too much grass so he's doing okay.

We superglue'd sheepkin all around the headpiece and put some fibregee around the rim of the nose bucket part. Don't know which type of GM you are using, but we used the Shires webbing one and it was fine, no rubs or anything.
