Hi
My boy desperately needs a grazing muzzle, however, I don't know which one to go for. I have used the shires one - cannot use this as it rubs.
The greenguard one looks popular but is expensive if it ends up rubbing him too.
Can you share your experiences?
Thanks.

I have been using the shires ones for 2 summers now, always buy a size bigger than bridle size and it helps to prevent rubbing - however I think you'll struggle to find any kind of muzzle that doesnt leave some kind of rub. a friend of mine lined the areas rubbing with an old fleece noseband cover, worked to a certain extent...

Agree.

I use the Shires one. My mare wears it while out overnight (about 13/14 hours). I have to put fleecy material around the top of the bucket as it would run the back of her jowl otherwise. This seems to keep the rubbing to a minimum.

I replace the fur if it gets wet too

I have used the shires one for 6 yrs with minimal rubbing used approx 5-6 hrs a day till i get a very bare paddock like a gate area then he doesnt have it on, but i brought a cob one online which was identical but a hy one never heard of before but much smaller was to snug and rubbed a lot more.

ok - maybe I'll try size bigger then.

how do you attach the fleece on yours? is it worth getting merino wool or is that overkill?

thanks for your help everyone -really appreciate this :)

Wrap it round and sew it on, or stick it with double sided tape, or just have long strips and stick it through the gaps and tie it on the outside. That's only on the bucket though- you might have to glue it if you're covering the cheek bits.

I would only use normal fleece because it's cheaper and as I replace it when it gets wet and muddy, I would be going through an awful lots of merino wool!

we have used the shires one on george and after a week had the rubbing problem!

I got a girth sleeve we had and cut a strip off either end (so its still fine to use just slightly shorter!) and then stitched on the fleece round the noseband.

He has since learnt how to get it off though :(

Hi

Have you tried, Best Friend Grazing Muzzles, they come with muzzle accessories to help prevent rubbing. Couple of people I know use them as they found the Green guard ones rubbed.

What size is your horse? I have a cob size greenguard my mare absolutely refuses to wear and will do anything to take off (greedy cow). I'll sell it cheap if you want as it's no good to me then you can always sell it on for no loss if it's no good?

I'm using a Shire's on my mare and it's also rubbing. Disappointed really because 3 horses are using on our yard, all horses different breeds and sizes yet all being rubbed.

My girl's got rubs in jowl area and slight rubs on side of face. I've sewn satin all round top of muzzle and now on side straps. In my view, they are a great idea although either the design or material they're made from needs some work.

I think they can all rub. The greenguard rubbed mine just on the point of the chin as that is the only place it touches as he eats. A small piece of sheepskin stopped that and now it's fine. Despite that I like how open they are as they don't get hot underneath.

Also started to run on side of her face now and I have lined all parts of muzzles and staps. If I cut away the parts that rub, I'll have no muzzle left :D Thought she might be a delicate little flower although 3 other horses on yard are having a similar problem.

Mine are the same, but I used a fabric fur girth sleeve chopped up to line the straps.
They still get rubbed under jaw, on top of nose tho.....gunna try duct tape.
Tried green guard an it cut into my mares chin.....

We use Shires ones, they do rub, especially when new. Ours are into their third summer now, and the rubbing is nowhere near as bad, as the webbing has gone a lot softer over the years - so may be worth washing them in fabric conditioner a few times?

I used salt water on the rubbed areas to harden the skin. We still get bald patches, but they're not sore now. Luckily the bare patches are under the bridles.

I'm not sure about putting sheepskin inside - it rains so blimmin much here I think it would be awful for them. Silk is a good idea though...

Use dink rugs muzzle for both boys. Both have 'rubbed' areas in different places on their muzzle but I've wrapped a little fleece around & fixed with a small cable tie.

Gaffer tape stopped chin rubbing on a Greenguard. the rubs are caused by the raw edge of the plastic, gaffer tape provides a smooth surface which stops the rubs. It should work on other types too I would guess.

3 days and still going strong.

I went for the shires one - full size for his cob nose. Covered it in fleeze.

And it seems to be working so far!!!!!!!!! :)

His nose hair is thinner and there is a little balder batch on the side of his face. But no sore areas under his chin which is usually really really bad after a day.

Onwards and upwards. The cheeky one has definitely figured out the way to get the most amount possible throught the hole. :)
