grazing muzzles and fat horses

ive just started using a shires grazing muzzle but after three days cafferys sore on his chin anyone else had this problem and how did you solve it? my horse is so greedy will eat every thing in sight, field hasnt got huge amount of grass but still manages to come in every night fat started getting fat pads so got muzzle cant win what ever i do oh to have a skinny TB

I'm mean.....! I would rather have sores and pony out 24/7 than pony inside or laminits... Have bought some fluffy things that I'm going to try to glue to where it rubs so hopefully that should help.

I also use this muzzle on my mare and it does make her sore. I limit the use to every other day and apply vaseline to the bits where it rubs to provide some barrier.
Btw - I have a TB and she is far from skinny!! In winter she's a bag of bones and in summer fat as a pig - hence the muzzle!

Is it possible to sew bits of satin-like material around the bits that rub, it might make it a bit better.

We lined ours with sheepskin and it has worked a treat.

Are you using a greenguard one or one like a bucket that covers the whole nose? The greenduard ones are much lighter, more airy and they don't tend to rub them as much in an attempt to get them off - much cooler for the summer too. My pony rubbed her chin to start with but it soon hardened up and it doesn't rub her any more. PS you don't need the greenguard halter, just buy the muzzle....

my hubby stiched sheepskin on to the muzzle ... as the pony was red raw

My sister has had the same problem with the shires grazing muzzle, so we will try to stitch something soft onto it, but horse has now become difficult to catch as he thinks he is being caught to put the muzzle on him!!!! can't win!

either stitch some soft fabric into it, thats what alot of my friends have done, or get down to your local tack shop and buy some Skin hardening gel or cream - i am not sure if this works yet but have been recommended it. i am trying the gold label one at the moment it only cost about 3.50. my ponies shires muzzle rubs her cheek.

all the muzzles rub though even the expensive ones.

Yup, we have the same problem. My pony has hidden his muzzle in the field somewhere so that problem is solved!

If it rubs then it is too small. As a guideline my Welsh D and my friends 14.2hh cob both have a full size, Shires are a bit off on sizing when it comes to muzzles.

A shetland on our yard had a pony size one on and it rubbed him to a point where his chin was pouring with blood. Not nice. Another yard I was on had a very finely built Welsh B and it took a cob size muzzle.
