I am having to muzzle my mare during the day at the moment to help to manage her weight. She has a shires muzzle with a rubber base with a hole in but she keeps getting it off as it is a velcro strap one. Plus she absolutely hates it. Is it worth trying a different kind? I have looked at Green guard ones but don't want to be spending that much if she's just going to destroy it. Any ideas? Thanks :)

My mare has a greenguard grazing muzzle with the halter. She has worn it on and off (mostly on) for the past 3 years and its still going strong.

I bought the Shires deluxe just over a week ago and it's not rubbing my girl at all. It's their new design, cut away under jowel, all velcro fastenings so it they get caught up they won't get injured, it's lined with sheepskin and I'd highly recommend. :)

I have the shires one and I wrap vet wrap over the velcro as my pony too got it off with the velcro coming undone. The one I am using is the old version with a clip like a headcollar but walkers have been feeling sorry for him and taking it off (pony unable to unclip the clip bit) so have now had to vet wrap the clip to make it harder for walkers to remove it.

I have ordered the new version with the sheepskin but will have to vet wrap all the areas that are velcro to him keep it on.

The greenguard one looks good but is expensive which put me off along with people saying that they are easier to get off than the shires ones.

My pony does not like his muzzle either but then that is not surprising as he is greedy and loves grass and it restricts his eating and he can see all his friends stuffing their faces which must be frustrating for him.

Thanks, I think I will have a look at the new shires one, the greenguard one does look good but a cheaper alternative would be better. She has it off at night but when she has it on she tries really hard to get it off and is clearly frustrated :(

Another one for the fleece lined shires one, the old one (with clip) rubbed my mare to pieces this year but the new one has been in situ for 2 weeks and all the rubs have grown back. May have to try the vetwrap trick though as she has almost had it off a few times by rubbing her head when rolling. I read on here that the shires one reduces intake by 80%, and the grew guard by only 40% but have never used a green guard so wouldn't know from personal experience.

I know Shires did a leather one with a buckle but I can't seem to find it available online anywhere so maybe they discontinued it.
But maybe look into leather ones, as I'd be worried about getting a nylon muzzle that doesn't have some sort of quick-release mechanism as nylon doesn't break like leather does under pressure.
I've heard of some people having problems with greenguard ones rubbing the lips.
