Getting to that time of year again soon!

My horse destroyed the greenguard one in 2 days. The shires one lasted better - 1.5 years (he only wears it in spring and most of summer though) but eventually he won and it came in in pieces!

Any reccommendations for muzzles?

How to kep them on (I put a leather head collar over the top but this doesn't always work!)?

How to stop the rubbing? - he has very sensitive arab skin on his face

Also, does anyone cut the holes in the shires one a bit bigger? I had one of ebay like this but was worried he might be getting too much grass? I dont want him to have too little either though and become frustrated/try harder to remove the muzzle!

Unfortunately, restricting turnout not an option nor is limiting field size - 2 x 3 acre fields (use 1 field from April - July, then swap to the other till October), with 5/6 horses in the group. Horse is out from 5:30am till approx 5:30pm

Am very worried this year, although he hasn't had laminitis for 2 years now, recent X-rays (for an unrelated issue) showed there had been some pedal bone rotation in the right hoof

TBH i would go for another shires. They are the best i'd say.
You can buy a set of fleecey headcoller pad thingys which you can arrange them on the headpiece, you get them from robinsons. I also bought some fleecey material from a local fabric shop (pink to match

) and stuck it on with evo stick (super strong stuff, has stayed on from about june till october in all weathers)
She did develop a new rub on her muzzle later on in the year which i just smeared vaseline on but will put some fabric on when i buy a new one.
Thats another thing, I need to by a new one as it's gotten really smelly (kinda) and grease has kind of destroyed it.
Definatley worth it though, saves vets bills and time!

Thats great mardigras, thanks. I had thought about stiching some fleece on, but that has other problems - I know the fleecy things from robinsons, they have velcro on dont they? making them easy to adjust/remove to clean etc

Where do you get evo stick from (sorry if im being thick!)?

I'm not sure, my dad recomended it because he uses it to glue things in his car, maybe get it from B&Q? You have to glue it on the fabric and the muzzle (if that makes sense) then place the two glued surfaces together. I was very sceptical at first but it was only just starting to come apart at the edges when I was done with it.
I really wish I had gone with the shires first have to say. Spent ages waiting for the greenguard to be delievered and by then horsey was already a bit podgy. When she trashed it she ended up like a cow with a sore face so had to wait for that to heal untill I could start using the shires one.

I have the same problem as you re: restricting turnout - I can't! My horse has about six acres of long grass and has been rather overweight for a while now. I've been too soft so far but having just realised I have only three months left before the vet comes to re-assess Maiden's lameness, I thought it was about time I was "cruel to be kind" and stuck it on 24/7. Maiden has a Shires one but it has a leather headpiece. I've sown a bit of fleecy fabric into a tube and put it over the headpiece, which has stopped the rubbing around the backs of her ears. I "inherited" the muzzle from a friend, and she had already cut bigger breathing holes into the front of the muzzle and it has a fairly large hole at the bottom (not sure if said friend made this bigger as well). Maiden sulks in it, but she can happily breathe, drink, and eat a small amount through it. I just hope and pray that it doesn't start rubbing or I'll have to start thinking about finding another field to keep her in

Brilliant, thanks for your help. Im going to go to B&Q for the evo stik, buy a couple of shires muzzles (probably off ebay, since they will only get trashed anyway!), some fleecy material and robinsons fleecy things and get 'adapting'!

Ill try and get the pink ones - they are probably easier to find in the field!

Haha yeah, it's only come off once! That was only because i attached it to her fly rug which neck was too small.
Happy grazing and hope your horse stays slim (begging mine does!)

My little NF was wearing a Shires w. added padding all summer and the rubbing got better (bit like wearing new shoes I suppose the skin seemed to "harden up"). I have two grazing muzzles, one in which I have made a bigger hole for when the grass is not as rich/plentifull. When there is lots of it and it's rich he wears the shires as it comes and he is perfectly able to eat and drink etc. Took a good 2 days before he got on with it doh... Felt like the meanest mummy in the world!

I have a shires one, it rubs Ed but I cut up some fibergee up and put that on the inside and it helped a lot.
He also escapes out of it alot, but I stitched his mane and part of his forelock around the head piece and it held very well.

Hettie - I felt mean too, he just stood in the field looking so sorry for himself for ages until he realised he could eat through it, I felt sooo bad!

I put my little Sec A in the Shires one and cut the hole so its a little bigger. She managed to destroy 2 last year on the bottom but mever really managed to get them off

To stop the rubbing, i cut up a sheepskin noseband as these had velcro on so i could adjust/move them when needed, if that makes sense

. It worked for my pony.
