hey guys :) looking for a grazing muzzle as my boy is getting porky and his saddle no longer fits :( so have to get a new one.. anyways he has a big field and with lush grass and no field mates so as you caan imagen lots of grass.. can anyone recommend a good grazing muzzle that doesnt restrict to much ?? thankyou xxx

I think it depends on the horse ie the shape / depth of his face etc. My shetty has one like the shires muzzle. Many people don't like them, but it suits him fine, doesn't rub and does a good job.

Like this one:

It takes a while for them to work it out, and I thought it wouldn't allow him enough, but he is still actually too fat, but thankfully not gaining any more, and has lost a little. The thing to remember is to persevere with it, it took around 4 weeks before I was totally happy with him in it, he did look very miserable for a while!!

i have a Greenguard on a 16.1hh WB. I did try the Shires but it didnt suit her. It rubbed and found it too restricting as it only as one hole to get the grass through. Although like Tennessse has said I suppose it depends on the horse and shape.

I had friend who used the Shires but made the hole bigger to allow her horse to graze more easily.

Can you borrow a Shires to see how yours gets on? The Greenguard is pricey at £65 but Robinsons do one that is very similar for about £45. If the Shires works for you, you will save £s.

P.S. The Shires I have is sitting doing nothing. Its a large. If it would fit your pony I am happy to send it to you free if you can pay the postage :-)

I considered making the hole bigger at the start as I was really worrying about it and felt terrible. Glad I stuck with it now, greedy little wot-name!!!!!

It also depends on the length of your grass, mine is about 6-8 inches in the day field (where he has his muzzle on) so now he has the knack, he can easily get a good mouthful which disappears like spaghetti through the hole lol!!!! Maybe I'll wire his jaws shut lol (joking, I think lol!!).

I know a few people who have said they made the hole a bit bigger and it's worked for them. I found mine in my local tack shop for around £16. As Liesel said, can you borrow one to try? But for more than a couple of weeks, as your horse may not 'work it out' too quickly. :)

Hmmm, my horse managed to make the hole bigger on his own - tooooo big. So I got a new muzzle with a tougher bottom. The hole is still its original size (bout the size of a 50p) and I would like to make it SMALLER! He's still gorging on the grass and he's got very efficient at grazing with it!

I have green guard for Oscar. Did rub his chin but i stitch a sweat band in the back (lol!) and it hasnt rubbed since!!

He can not graze on short gras in it though or eat hay through it, but other than that is has been fab!!

I agree tho they are expensive!
