This has probably been done to death but nevermind :)

Which grazing muzzle would you recommend? There seem to be a few out there and I've never used one before so don't know where to start. If it helps, my horse is a big 17hh IDx, not a little pony with a dainty head - are some better for big horses?!

Are some types better for long grass and others for short?

Thanks :)

I use a Shires muzzle for my 13.1hh NF. It rubbed to start with but i covered the straps in sheepskin. I find these muzzles give more room for them to nuzzle around without being too restriced. Although i have heard alot of peoples horses managing to escape from them.

Lots of people have success with the Shires muzzle and I've used one myself.

However, if you have electric fencing, please cut off the metal ring that hangs down from the underside of the muzzle as my horse got an electric shock when too close to the fence which was very unpleasant for her.

Shires muzzle here too (16hh cb so not such a dainty little nose either!). We adapted hers with vetwrap cheek pieces as it just started rubbing her coat on her cheeks and we didn't want it to start making her sore. She did manage to get out of it a few times, but nothing a bit of strap tinkering hasn't fixed!

I use the shires ones, customised by using the greenguard muzzle headcollar parts as the muzzle didn't work on my horse, hope you can see from the pics how I've customised it, I have two the other has spur straps at the front to hold the centre strap. Duck tape comes in very handy for securing it all ! There is a sheepskin noseband cut in half longways on the inside thats what the other pieces of string are holding on. one of the pieces holding the centre thing is undone in the pic, thats why I prefer spur straps

Next question please :)

Can I use a Shires muzzle on short grass, or are muzzles generally only suitable for longer grass? We tend to have fairly poor grazing at our yard (thankfully) but my horse can still get fat on thin air so I'd like to restrict his intake of even poor grazing in the Spring...

My mare is 16.1hh warmblood cross and she wears the greenguard grazing muzzle with the greenguard halter, she didn't take to the shires at all but they're all different.

My paddock has got short grass but I muzzle her anyway, she's only out for 5hours minimum. Last year the grass was the same and she got lami, so I'm taking no chances this year - muzzle went on again last week.
