Hi,
I was just wondering what peoples opinions on using grazing muzzles were?
My horse is getting fat on the grass at the moment and i was considering using one, but i dont want to stress her. Does anyone use one?

Would definitely recommend them!
Been using the shires ones for the past 4 years and help keep my mares weight under control. Definitely not a stress on them, far better than the stress of laminitis anyway! Also a lot better than having to take them off of grazing and standing them in etc.
My mare was very bad at guilt tripping me when I first put hers on but pursue with it and I'm sure you'll see a big difference :)

I'd highly recommend the shires muzzles too, we're on our second year of using them. we have horses of all shapes and sizes in them, if you can get the full size use that, we've found it rubs far less than any of the others (obviously it'd be too big for anything small, but we have 14hh connemaras in the full size).

All of ours are a brilliant weight, and we have the muzzles to thank for most of that (we've done a bit of work too!)

Thankyou for thore replys. I forgot to say in the original post - she is a new horse, i have only had her a week and she is still slightly stressed which is why i was wondering if using a muzzle would stress her more?

I use a dinky rugs one! I think its much kinder looking than the shires one which i why i chose it cause i felt so bad putting one on him! He also finds it very comfortable and doesnt bother about it at all! Theyre not to expensive either only £20 and they do big sizes as my boy has an XL one! Theyre really good quality too :)

The shires one is excellent and hardwearing. DO NOT MAKE THE MISTAKE OF BUYING A ROMA ONE!! They are utter rubbish and desinegrate with great ease! Make sure it is big enough and should be fitted with around an inch below the muzzle at rest. Also make sure there is plenty room round the top. I see so many people say they can't use them as they rub their horse but they are far too small!! Also keep them clean as a build up of grease will also increase the likelihood of rubbing.

My boy was fine when I first started putting it on him but got more claustrophobic each morning when I put it on. I solved this by cutting out the upright bit each side which covered his nostrils and now he's much better. Perfectly ok after that and it allows him to have some time with his pals in the field instead of confined to the stable, that would stress him more than the muzzle - and he's getting more exercise out in the field.
I made the mistake of buying a Roma one and my Cushings TBx hasn't worn it that much, but the rubber at the bottom has worn so much, the hole in the bottom is getting bigger.
I repaired the hole by very cheaply buying a piece of tough leather from my local saddler. He very kindly cut out a 5" diameter circle for me. I then punched some holes around the edge and used a boot lace to fix it inside the muzzle so it wont matter how big the hole gets now!
There's a pic of my adaptation in my albums if anyone wants to look.

have a green gaurd one of my rather fat horse. She is quite melodramatic about everything after the inital week of not wanting it on she now just excepts it to get it on i do put an apple in it and since she is govened by her tummy she is then happy to except it. Have it on a normal headcoller with vet wrap on to stop it rubbing

Yep shires gets a thumbs up and also the best friend very similar. Buy bigger than you need and will be less likely to rub, neither of mine rub. Some take to them easily others make you feel terribly guilty and I was close to giving up at one stage, but they have been using them now for the past 3 yrs no probs. I always give a treat prior to putting on and they both come over to me when they see the muzzles, they associate it with going out and a treat... You never know she may have worn before Good Luck

I use the XL dinky muzzle too...much softer on the muzzle than any of the others.:D

The Greenguard one rubbed my geldings lips raw, would never use one again
