The price!! Seriously, I think personal preference, some bucket muzzles work for some horses, some prefer the greenguard. I have tried both, the cheap bucket muzzle (£17) worked but rubbed, the greenguard was expensive, fiddly to fit correctly, rubbed at first, then she learned to push it to one side, I now have a Shires comfort muzzle (£12) and for us its perfect, doesnt rub her at all and she wears it all day (in at night)
Yes it is the price... I have two gg's and hated them... shires special worked a treat. The rubbing is more to do with mouth conformation so choose wisely. Rubs can be dealt with relatively cheaply... Laminitis is EXPENSIVE and DEADLY!
I've used the shires bucket one for two years with success but it started to rub this year so last week we bought the new shires deluxe one with fleece lining and cut back section under the chin, and also poll and cheek pads, with no clip on the cheek, and it seems to be doing the trick -the hair's growing back anyway. Haven't tried the green guard one so have no opinion I'm afraid.
Yes. It wasn't a joke or trick question. I am new to them and wondered if there is any merit in the more expensive muzzle or whether it is just an overpriced muzzle. I have so far had good feedback re the shires delux. Thanks guys
The dinky rugs muzzles are brilliant. My pony has to wear his 24/7 (he won't stay in electric fencing or a stable so I have no choice) and it doesn't rub and really limits his grazing
Thank you all for your replies. They feel so horrible putting on that I want the most comfortable one. I will look at the dinky ones. Tally ho- I agree laminitis is not what I want and neither is a obese NEw Forest. She just lives on fresh air and eats in a manic paranoid way whenever she is near grass
I tried the cheaper Shires one and it rubbed my iberian/connie x. So I had to fork out for a greenguard. To be fair the greenguard works a treat so despite the higher price I still think it's worth it. My first one was £30 off ebay, 2nd hand. That lasted 3 years then I replaced it with a brand new one. Far less hassle than laminitis, soaking hay and keeping them in over the summer.
My girl can and has destroyed a £15 muzzle in one day, whereas she has had her greenguard since last summer and its still going strong. I have covered the head collar in fur so it doesn't rub and she seems happy enough in it.
My little guy wears a dinky muzzle. Spent ages looking through threads on here to work out which one to go with. He's had it for a month maybe & have finally managed to keep it on him by strapping a head collar over the top & plaiting it into his forelock. However, when I take it off to check & feed him he then runs away from me so I can't get it back on - little monster!
I would recommend a dinky but haven't tried the other makes. If you go for a dinky just make sure you get a big enough size. My boy is 12.2 and in a "large"
