We are looking to use this year a grazing muzzle for our very weight prone welsh pony! She has to be out all the time due to her "partner" being inseparable from her! Not had any experience in using muzzles before so any suggestions on which ones are the best to use and how long they can have them on for!

Many Thanks!

I bought a Best Friend grazing muzzle last year. Rubbed my little horse - so can't recommend it - but do recommend the principle.

Amy wore hers in the day only.

i have used the Greenguard muzzles and found them good, i didnt like the one that looks like a flower pot, plus it rubbed by pony under his chin

I've got a Greenguard one and *tocuh wood* it works well. I ended up buying the head collar for it though, purely because he is such an escape artist and can get out of all the others!

.
Only problem I have had though, is that if it is worn 24/7 it can cause rubbing but not terribly

I personally recommend the Best Friend Deluxe grazing muzzles. They havent rubbed my pony's face and she wears it 24/7. I used to have the greenguard grazing muzzles but they rubbed her and she managed to work her way out of them

I hate muzzles, I have been to the shops twice to buy one for my daughter little fat Welsh pony, but couldnt get it, I felt so cruel. I have now made him a little paddock within his field so he can still see his mates but his grazing is restricted. I am now waiting for the weight to come off.

yes - mine is lammi prone so again only has to look at grass and gets fat. She gets upset if she has to be in the stable so found this was the best thing for her so she could still be with her friends, but not get fat and at risk of another lammi attack

cant understand that. mine havent rubbed at all. maybe the shape of amys face compared to Flightys??

Possibly - or I may not have fitted it correctly. Anyway sending her to stud did the trick - she came back very slim.......

Just can't bring myself to use one.
When mine were all in together I used to make a paddock within a paddock so the ponies could stay with my bigger cobbies. They were out 24/7 too.

I'm afraid it's a case of trial and error. Our lad doesnt seem to fit anything well, the greenguard one he managed to get off, and the shires one rubs him. I padded it out though and it doesnt rub any more.
I prefer to muzzle rather than restrict the paddock, as I like him to have as much exercise space as possible.

my pony refuses to wear one, its too dangerous to put one on him as he goes mental and bashes his head and rubs his face on whatever he can find to get it off!!

so he is on restricted grazing instead and is now a happy bunny!!

My fat welsh A has a greenguard one and its great! It took me a while to get it fitted correctly but now he is out 24/7 and looks fantastic! Hes quite happy too, although pleased to see me at bed time when I take it off. (As no rain we have very little grass so he can eat unrestricted overnight!)

i can understand where your coming from but when mines out 24/7 the lads have a good run around from time to time & being on restricted grazing means he cant do that, whereas being muzzled means he eats less & when he does have a run around he's also excercising

Thats where I'm lucky..My field is on a hill. I make a thinish paddock along the full length of the field. That way they get plenty of exercise.

no i dont like them either, I put pony in starvation paddock. (paddock that has always been grazed hard and is not fertilised_).
I wouldnt want to wear a gas mask all the time..... cant have a scratch or a nibble at your mates (not me,, pony) yuk!!
