Grazing restrictions

Alot of liveries keep their horses in seperate strips so as to "Avoid injury"

Considering a potential yard with this but never done it before as my horses has always been kept with at least 10 others, mares and geldings, all shapes and sizes. (we have never had any problems)

What are peoples opinions on the seperate strips where they can see and touch one another but are not together.?

I personally feel that he will be missing out on playing and grooming properly with other horses but am i being overly sensitive? As lots of yards do it and surely all those horses cant be unhappy. ?
 
The yard I'm on gives separate strips per horse and they seem fine like that. They can see each other and touch over the fences. I have two horses so they share together which is nice.

Can you ask if your horse could share ?
 
My horse is in large fields with both mares and geldings. I wouldn't have it any other way. He has a great time playing and hooning round. Sometimes he gets a few scratches/kicks and bites, but nothing serious.

Theres nothing better than watching them all playing together, i have never had a problem either, as you say the occasion scratch here and there but never anything serious or that needed treating
 
I don't like it, I think its much nicer to let them socialize & play. Only time I'd do it is if I had a horse that was a real danger to others.
 
I'm sure like anything, it suits some and doesn't others, mine LOVES company is always within a few feet of his shadow! He came from a yard with individual only turn out and I do wonder whether that was among the reasons he was so badly behaved there - clearly I can't ask him!!!
 
Given that horses are obviously herd animals, it makes sense to keep them together. In our herd, some geldings mount the mares (the mares invite them to when they are in season) - no one seems to get hurt. If a horse doesn't like company, it's probably because it's not used to it.
 
My mare has her own patch (did share for a while. but kept bonking the gelding and got a knock on her hock leaving a boney lump).

She grooms over the fence, but comes in uninjured and with her rugs intact!
