Grazing survey

I'm confused by the first question, why not make the options 0,1,2 etc?
What do I tick for one horse?

Also I find it hard to answer question 2 as turnout changes throughout the year for example 24/7 in summer but not in winter.

I put down 1-2 as sometimes help out others, rather then 0-1.

With the grazing questions I put down what I'm doing ATM

However there's no option if your different horses are on different turnout, ie 1 stabled, 1 out.

Oh right, I see, thanks, didn't think of that at all.

Is it possible to comment using your "main horse" or is it worth filling it in for each horse?

Feedback appreciated as this is the first survey I've done

Thanks

tried to do it, but mine are often out 24/7 in the summer, but are in on very hot days - and are in at night during the worst of the winter. No options to say 24/7 for half the year :(

2 are not a herd imho tho.................

Think this is more aimed at livery yards only tho?

Feedback: better aimed at 1 horse owners as otherwise the tick boxes are flawed.
eg, those who have 2 or more could theorectically tick every box, even tho only 1 might box walk, another might weave, etc.
A companion could be ticked - but also boxes for hunting, schooling etc.

Sorry to sound neg, but you asked for feedback & I think you would be best off asking 1 horse owners in livery yards only to complete the survey.

The questions regarding vices in relation to turnout will give a false result because the survey requests an answer to the situations that do not apply and there is no way of differentiating between them.

ok thats interesting. I'm using this as primary research, as soon as I've identified any correlations I'm then going to do a field observation on the seperate groups. I'm using this survey to see firstly if there are any links to behaviour.

I was going to fill it in for each of my horses, but it wont let me! :(

Here's the info for you anyway. My four horses live together as a herd.

Horse 1, TB, 20 year old, retired, crib bites, lives out 24/7 in a mixed herd. (I filled in your survey with this horse's details)

Horse 2, Anglo arab, 13yo, happy hacker (out of work at the mo) lives out 24/7 in a herd. No field/stable vices but can be excitable (loves going out and about), can be spooky and nappy when ridden (has been known to rear, spin and buck too).

Horse 3, Arab, 3yo, not backed yet, lives out 24/7 in a herd, no vices.

Horse 4, Arab, 1yo, not backed yet, lives out 24/7 in a herd, no vices.

Thankyou, I'll add those in when I get the final results from survey monkey.

I appreciate your help and feedback.

Hi have completed survey but thought it would be better to give you detailed answers here as there are no options for parts of my routine.

I have 2 horses - 1 cob and 1 TB (ex racer). In the summer they either live out or are in during the day (no option for overnight t/o), in the winter they are in overnight for about 10-12 hours. My TB does crib/windsuck (again no option for windsucking) when she is in or if there is not much grass in the field, however she is fine with plenty of forage. However I believe the windsucking is due to previous ulcers (have successfully been treated) caused by a high cereal diet from when she was racing as she only does it occasionally, as opposed to her stabling routine.

Check your spelling - 'herd' is what horses are part of, 'heard' is to do with noise.
I didn't submit because it wanted an answer to questions that didn't apply to me. You need to get a small number of people to test things like these before you release them to the general public, and did you show it to your supervisor before you started?

Thanks for pointing out the spelling error. I did get it proof read so I'm not sure how that got past. I also did trial it on a small group of people of single horse owners (10) and felt I wanted to get a broader picture, if possible, hence opening it out to another forum. I don't think I've done anything wrong by doing so.

I have found this experience useful as it has highlighted weaknesses in the primary research that the initial sample did not highlight. This is something that is useful in any future projects.

Thanks again for your comments.

Oh, this is the first time i've used survey monkey too. I appreciate the feedback, at least I know for next time!

Couple of things that occurred to me;
If you ask for answers from just one of an owners horses, they may choose the one (or not ) with a vice, so the result would be distorted.

It might be helpful to know how the horse had been kept in its present routine, or if the horse had been bought with a vice and was subsequently kept differently.

I know these are things that you will be looking at in your research, but it shouldn't be too complicated to put them in the survey for a general picture.

as others have said, unfortunately survey not really workable for more than the one horse owner, but actually you m,ay get a more interesting picture from multiple horse owners becaues thye may be more likely to have control over how their horses are graed and who is kept with who. i entered details for my 11 year old TBx mare who is in work and presentlly grazed alone. if useful here's info on the other two.

grazed as a pair adjacent, or close to other mare (separated from her as she is dominant/can be agressive and youngster doesn't know when enough is enough!

20 year old TBx mare, out 24/7(access to barn/stabling in winter/horrid weather) with gelding. no vices.retired
3 year old warmblood gelding, out 24/7 (access to barn/stabling in winter/horrid weather) witrh mare. no vices.not yet in work.

Done but had to answer some questions not relevant ie my horses are out 24/7/ they are yearlings. I had to answer "none" in 4 catagories to do with turnout time so ,for example, it says "none " to any vices etc if turned out only in the mornings. but they are out 24/7/ Cant see how this survey is goiing to be accurate for anybody.

Thanks to all who have taken part and have offered advice, it has certainly given me some feedback and areas where I need to look further into especially the multiple horse owners and history into behaviour.
