if it's still growing, then i think there is. or if it's a bit that hasn't been grazed before, and there's plenty of it, it must have some nutritional value i would think.
Yes this week they are wanting to be in and eating hay, last week they woudnt touch their hay, just bought a big bale, I can see it being gone in a week!
For shetlands there's nutrition in grass even if it's brown and dry...
. In a nutshell, yes there is, but there isnt. For your two i would say the grass alone would be fine for day time turnout. they have hay at night anyway (If I'm right in remembering they're in at night)? TBH even if you were walking them out daily / lungeing, they still wouldnt be using more calories and goodness than they were taking in. If you're worried a general vitamin and mineral supplement in a handful of Hi Fi would ensure they have everything they need, but I'm sure they wouldnt need it.
We've just put ours on our winter grazing that is about 6" long and they're eating about a third of the haylage they were so it's obv filling them up and neither are changing weight yet.
We only put hay in the field last year when it was snowy
My section A is still doing well on just grass but my TBx is now demanding hay - I think it depends on they type of horse and pasture. Our grass has been poor all year because it was under water for a month and it's clay soil.
Mine are on the winter field, about a foot long, although looks quite rough, they come in at 4pm, and are only eating one slice of hay each till 6 am! So they must be full. ( by the way they are native ponies and are muzzled!) They suck it up like spaggetti!
