Grease?

Hi, I was chatting to yard owner today, and somehow we got on to the topic of greasing hooves during winter to stop the ice getting in etc, but she'd never heard of this. I've never done it, but read it in books etc, so now Im wondering wether people do actually do it, or not?

If you do, what do you use? Like, can you buy a tub of grease?
