Me again. My mare has a greasy residue up her back cannons (she has previously had very bad mud fever which had to have the vet and antibiotic cream, the works) could it be related to that? It's scabby and if you pick them off they bleed a tiny bit. We scrubbed it all off and put sudocrem on it and it went away but now it has come back. Should I get some more antibiotic cream from the vet and treat it like mud fever?

Google Cannon Crud !!

I treat our lads greasy, scabby cannons with Nizoral shampoo. Wet a sponge, blob some shampoo on, massage it in then leave it on to do its stuff. No need to rinse.

fab stuff.

£8 a bottle over the counter at the chemists.

clean thoroughly with an Iodine wash removing all scurfy bits (very technical I know!) .. leave on for 10 mins or so and then rinse off and dry

scrub off with plastic curry comb, shampoo and dry well. then leave. if you put greasy potions on it just breeds underneath. only need to wash about every 2 weeks. just scrub greasy bits off every few days
