Well my shetland is speherical, grey and of indeterminate age. He came to me with this core skill, so not sure when it starts

He has some other skills. He once jumped right onto the back of my 16.2 dressage horse who was just about to stand back up from rolling. He did stand up, and Button clung to his withers with his teeth, with his front legs on one side and his back legs on the other. I've never seen anything so brave or so funny in my horse life.
 
Its not just shetlands - my 15.2 irish cob thing can limbo under an electric fence without disturbing a single post. I assumed she was jumping it until I witnessed her amazing limboing act!
