started adding haylage ,my horse is really greedy and gobbled, got a ball of it stuck in the back of her throat, and.frightened me to death. i normally feed off the floor as its better for them but how can i slow her down. should i resort to haylage net. or any other ideas. anyone else have this problem

See my hay post, not haylage but George eats like a horse possessed and just bites holes in his haynet if he can't get it quick enough!! Wish I had a solution.

one of my liveries is like this. stuffs his face so fast he can eat a days hay in a couple of hours. He doesn't need it as he poos an unbelievable amount. With the serious shortage of hay I decided I had to restricct him to a far smaller amount and make it last. So I put a brick in his feed Ialso give him a huge tub trug of dry hi fi lite and a normal amount of hay in a really strong small holed net.

It's worked. he is far slower eating his feed, he can't eat the hay fast and if he trys to stuff th hi fi its like eating dry cream crackers. he has slowed down to a quarter of the speed. and he produces far less poo as his body is actually able to utilise what he stuffs

George already has a salt lick in his feed bowl, but maybe I will try the two haynets inside each other and some hi-fi in a trug and see how he goes with that. My boy is 16.3 but I have never seen so much poo come out of one horse, 15-20 large ones (sorry, hope no-one's eating) overnight is quite normal!!!

mine is the same - he just eats so much - he can get throuhg his hay really fast and poos like a horse possessed!

its not just related to hay though - last summer when he was out 24/7 I had to poo pick every single day and worked out that he did 20 poos every 24 hours!! now thats a lot isn't it?

I would prefer to feed off the floor but ponio gobbles it up too fast. I put soaked hay in a small holed net - I think it's a Shires one, it's red and black - much easier than fighting to get the hay in two nets. I've also started feeding LucieStalks from Simple Systems - he can have a good amount of it but it is low in calories and it must fill him up as he doesn't get through as much hay.
