Hey!
Just wondering, id like to try my veteran mare on some joint supplements this winter as shes getting creaky in her old age...

So, is it ok to mix supplements? id ideally like to be giving all but im not sure if i can do that?

Or has anyone got any supplements they really rate for joints? ive never had to feed a joint supplement before so im not sure whats the best..

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Which have you tried on their own?

We used devils claw for an old arthritic gelding and it eased him loads. But, i think it's only a bute substitute for pain, rather than things such as glucosamine which supposedly actually helps the joints repair/ prevents damage. I would imagine it would be ok to mix something like those 2 as they have different effects, but i'm not sure about other combinations.

Ive used none, id just like to know which are good combinations, which might help most... Shes incredibly stiff and at times looks arthritic. Shes an ex eventer turned broodie and she looks to me like shes been hammered at some point. Ive only had her about 18 months.

Thankyou for your help though, just the kind of answer i was looking for :)

If you want all in one (well, nearly;)) I have had quite a lot of success with Equistro Flexadin - it contains Devil's Claw as well as the other important bits (very scientific, I know, but it's late and I CBA to explain any better)

As someone else has said here, devil's claw is not a supplement, but is a more natural form of pain relief. Quite important to check ingredients if you go for a mix, as some of the arthritic ones will have devil's claw already in them and you will not need to give it separately.

Yes im aware Devils Claw is not a supplement, i feel she needs the pain releif to help her gain comfort in her joints. Hence why i was asking for a reccomendation for a combination :P

I may go for the Devils Claw/Cortaflex combination

I started feeding my lot Nupafeed Flex GLM a couple of months ago. My 15yr old mare gets pretty stiff sometimes and I've noticed a massive change in her. She careers about the place like a 3yr old. I'm really shocked at the difference I have to say. I'm now feeding it to my other mare and the 2 foals as well as it's meant to prevent problems as well as relieve existing symptoms. Hope that helps! x

I currently use devils relief with superflex with amazing results, horse so much more loose and supple now. Cheaper than cortaflex aswell

I use NAF's devil's relief for my arthritic mare. It has devils claw and some other stuff in it, MSM and or glucosamine... I can't remember exactly :o but it's helped her alot.

Devils Claw made no difference to my old mare, though I know some people swear by it. Turmeric is supposed to be great for pain relief / anti - inflamatory (just the standard stuff from the supermarket), lots of people I know have used it with success. Indian frankincense (boswelia) is also supposed to work well.

For the joint repair type supplements you can get straight MSM (e.g. from The Metabolic Horse), but if you want a mix I've heard good things about Aviform Suppleaze Gold and it has a good spec, good quantities of the active ingredients. Another lady on my yard swears by Cortaflex for her old thoroughbred, she put her on it quite recently and says she can really feel the difference.
