Been given a nice bridle, but it's been laying around in the back of someone's tack room for yonks so is covered in a thick layer of dry green mold. Person was throwing it away! But on close inspection, the bridle is almost new and the stitching is absolutely fine. I've rescued it but now I've got it home, am not sure whether to just sponge off the mold with a damp sponge and then clean with it a leather feed. Or whether there is something else I should be doing to remove the mold first?

My own tack has never been in this condition so I am clueless what to do about the mold.

Excellent, thanks. So the mold doesn't have to be killed off with anything in particular. I'm guessing once the bridle's in good nic it will stay mold free from them on.

Great, I'll get cracking on it now then

i would wipe the leather over with a solution of milton(used for sterilizing babies bottles).
when it has dried naturaly, then i would feed the leather with a balsm which had lanolin in,a couple of times over a couple of days.after that i would saddle soap the outside for waterproofness.

I was recommended using dilute Milton or similar on a cloth and wipe it over to clean the bridle and kill the mould. Then allow to dry naturally before cleaning with a conventional leather cleaner or saddle soap, then when dry give a nice oil.
My fave dressing is the leather balsam by Carr and Day and Martin, which smells like honey and makes your hands soft too. It contains beeswax and lanolin.
Have also heard that ko cho line dressing, red stuff ( by same manufacturer) is also good for repelling the growth of mould. I do use that also but prefer the CDM leather balsam for making the leather soft, supple and smelling lovely.

ko cho line is good if you are packing something away that will not be used for a while.apply liberally then wrap in newspaper.

Thanks for that tip as I have a load of leatherwork that needs sorting out, when I get the time lol. I will remember that though for the future as I have a few tubs of the stuff
