Do people still put green ribbons on their horses at dressage comps? I am taking my 5 year old out to his first proper dressage on Saturday. He’s done some stuff at home and hacked to the yard down the road but this is the first ‘scary new place’ and I am worried about how he will behave, he is still a wee bit worried about other horses boxing him in against the side of the arena. I think the only way to get him over this is to get him and out get him used to it. Can I put a green ribbon in his tail for dressage and will people know what it means?

You have nothing to lose by doing it but don't expect people to understand it! I have used green on occasion but people don't give it the respect it deserves.
If you really want a good chance of keeping people away put a red one in! I'm sure you don't want your horse branded as a kicker but I'd rather have a chilled happy horse with space, IMO.

Hi,

I don't have a clue about the dressage etiquette regarding tail ribbons, but I see absolutely no harm in putting one on him for collecting ring etc, ask someone, Secretary maybe? If they are that fussy about it (and considering they allow bling and faffy taped braids) I can't see why they should be, then just have someone whip it off before you go in.

If anyone doesn't know what a green ribbon means then they jolly well should  it is a very basic thing. Green means exactly what it looks like - novice, likely to explode in all directions, no excuse for behaviour, but a courteous warning as far as I am concerned.

I would put one on if it was me :)

I used a red ribbon for my youngsters first showjumping comp even though he doesn't kick but was just incase he was green/nervous- worked a treat people steered well clear! Not that he was bothered in the slightest... But I wasn't to know! :P

I would also put a red ribbon in, it seems to get a lot more respect than the green ribbon. Younger ones are also more likely to know what the red ribbon means and therefore give it more respect. :)
