Green water tank

Hi can anyone offer any advice please. We don't have running water on our yard but collect it in water buts from the roof. However, just recently the water has turned really green, presumably due to the hot weather we are having. Does anyone use any form of water purifying tablets/liquid to clean the water in their tanks. I've tried to search the internet for information. Our tank holds 1000 litres and is almost full.

our water from the butts is green, i don't bother with the colour as the horses seem to like it so do the plants

I've got a trough with green water in it, and a trough that I empty and refill most days. They all choose to drink the green water first! It stays relatively clean, as they drink it so fast, so I don't worry about it too much. I wouldn't let them have it if it was sludgy and full of crap.
