I've just taken delivery of a new Greenguard Grazing Muzzle & Headcollar.

On the headcollar, there is an additional longish strap that appears as though it is meant through the loop at the top of the poll and around under the jaw/gullet area. It's not clear from the photo what to do with it though....

Does anyone have experience of where to position this strap please? I'll leave it off to start with as I don't want it to rub him or make him uncomfortable - wearing a grazing muzzle is bad enough in his opinion!!

I have never used the strap, but I think you're right about where it goes. I think it's for horses who work out how to slip the headcollar off over their ears??? However mine has been fine for 3 years without it on (I thought it was a hazard).

Didn't stop mine getting it off over her ears :-(
Did it up tighter next time and ended up with muzzle and headcollar swinging round her throat attached to that strap, won't be using it again!!!

I've always used the GG muzzle without the throat strap; it seems a bit dangerous to me in that they could get caught up. I'd rather they could get the muzzle off if caught on something. Apologies for hijacking the thread slightly, but which way round do people have the slits? I've always had them horizontally, i.e from side to side up to now, but the new muzzle to fit my new horse will only fit if the slits run vertically, ie from front to back of the nose. I'm worried Nutmeg won't be able to eat enough grass this way, as my previous pony couldn't. But it is the way that the photograph on the instruction leaflet shows. Does anyone have any experience with trying the slits either way? At the moment Nutmeg is sulking for the few hours she has the muzzle on, as I've only just started her in it. Will she learn to eat enough grass eventually? My other ponies took to it much more easily but that was with the slits horizontally. Any comments welcomed, thank you.

Oh blimey staffylover, just realised that I have fitted it with the slits horizontally! I am going back to check him again later on so will change it around then! It seemed to fit him well though and he put his head straight down and started picking at the grass which is a big improvement on him refusing to even try to eat with the bucket style muzzle. He was starting to look a bit lean so thought I would try the GG design.

If I could fit it on Nutmeg with the slits horizontally, I would! I think it is easier for them to get grass through that way. This may not be what you want, of course!

Keep a good eye teeth wear, this is what happened to 2 of my horses after wearing this muzzle for 8 hrs a day for 5 months

Never used it just take it off

Came across the photo of your horses teeth and wondered if/when they recovered more normal appearance? My girl is like this I think through being on very short grazing with hay given twice daily (no muzzle). Mare kept in same field as her has no unnatural wear. Worried as to how to improve them.
