Greenguard muzzle just come straight off

I thought I would try my horse in a greenguard muzzle today, to see how he got on with it, in preparation for the spring.

However, he just rubbed his nose on the ground which pushed it to one side and then he couldn't eat at all because it was half in his mouth! :rolleyes:

Am I doing something wrong? I thought these were supposed to be the best kind of muzzles! :confused:

I think I fitted it right, anyone else have this problem??? Think I will just send it back - not impressed in the slightest!
 
Is it the old style one? My mare can remove those in seconds but has only ever got the new, deeper one off once in 3 years of using it and that was my fault for not fixing the headcollar properly. Hers is fitted so that it just touches her lips.
 
Yes it is the old style one, maybe I should swap it for the new one then?

To say I'm disappointed in an understatement. :mad:

I was trying the greenguard because he hates the bucket style ones!
 
I love the greenguards and use 3 in the summer, I don't use the normal greenguard headcollars though I attact it to a normal headcollar and don't use their silly straps I use string.

Naughty I know but it works and never had a problem
 
I had the older style as iv used them for years but they become so thin from use I had to buy new ( hate the price it's stupid for a bit of plastic) I attact it in 4 points but make sure the nose piece is quite snug and not had a problem. They use to try rubbing it of on the floor but they gave up and the muzzles never came of
 
I do think they are well over priced, headcollars are crap and the leather straps break so often the ponies never had the muzzles on so had to sort it. But do keep in mind the string prob wouldn't break as easy so use a field safe headcollar just in case
 
To be fair CG - we did try to warn against the old style :) you need the new style with front face strap and throat lash if you seriously want him to wear it. Perhaps you could modify yours in some way?
 
I don't use the Greenguard headcollar either- I have one but pony hated the strap down the front of her face. I use a padded headcollar with extra sheepskin on the cheeks and throat lash, and I made a modified sleeve for the noseband so that the strap holding the muzzle doesn't touch her face. Mine has never managed to rub off the new style muzzle and she has tried :D

I had the old style and mare mare could eat over the top. Got the new style Greenguard with the halter, shes had it 3 years now and it's still on.
 
Either a) you haven't fitted it properly, b) you aren't using the proper greenguard headcollar, or c) you are using the old-style mask.

You have to spend a bit of time making sure horse can't 'eat around' it - I have a new style one which I bought brand new for £80 in April with the correct headcollar and my horse absolutely cannot get round it, and believe me he's tried - he's even managed to rip the corner of the plastic and it still works. It does need adjusting and tightening from time to time as it works loose.

I know I know :( I knew the old style wouldn't be as good, but I didn't think it would be THAT crap!

Found it hard to spend £60 on a bit of plastic...
 
The price is stupid BUT if you can make it work it will probably provide you with peace of mind for the next few years. I am so so grateful that my fat monster will happily wear hers. She CAN get it off but she is obviously getting enough through it to be satisfied. Put her on a shorter paddock and she will take it off. Good compromise as she is certainly eating far less than without it on! I stand and watch her and I would say it takes her a good ten 'graze and chomps' with the muzzle on to consume what I see her take in with one mouthful with it off (if that makes sense). When she first had it on it was a matter of life and death as she gorged until she colicked..... Several times. Now it is for weight maintainence. They are a nightmare aren't they!
 
get an old leather cavesson noseband.pad it with lots of sheepskin and let her just wear that in the field.put headcollar over the top -sorted.can still drink and eat a bit.sometimes the old ways r the best.
 
We've used Greengurds for years. We don't use their head collars as we find they rub the forelock. Normally I fit the guard to an old leather head collar & they've always worked fine. You need to spend a while adjusting the fit. Eventually, when you get it right, it will give you years of good service. I've just replaced ours as it had worn thin over the years. I have to agree though that the makers are getting greedy because there is no way that the price of it can really be justified.
 
How have you found sizing the greenguard? Tried full size one on my 15.2 tb and it seemed really big (maybe because new and stiff) so have swapped for pony size which seems small (but not tried it on yet).
