Grey horses that live out dont get covered in poo

My first stallion's breeder was going to be in the area so said she would pop in and see him. He was usually immaculate but that day he did something he had never done before or did again and rolled in the muddy pond in the corner of his paddock. He was plastered from head to foot in wet slimy black mud. Couldn't see his colour at all, loudly marked black near leopard. Just could not believe my eyes.

Now this, is impressive!!

That was his finest work to be fair, although I have many, many similar pictures of him!

This was way back in the day (he’s very sadly been gone almost 2yrs) when I got him in to go to a show, luckily it was summer so I hosed it all off!
ETA the same on both sides! And a pic to show he could scrub up well!

My grey never managed the field poo stain, would always be covered in it when he was stabled though!

He preferred to just plaster himself in mud when in the field…

This was the exact reason i ruled out greys when i was buying again! I love them when they’re clean but I don’t have the time to dedicate to a bucket and sponge 😁

We had one some years ago who would literally tip toe through the gateway, out into the field and find a clean dry area before rolling. I remember turning up one day and getting him in and, you know that kind of "omg somethings really wrong" feeling when you can't instantly put your finger on it?

He had a muddy cheek! Never in the years we had him had i or did i again see him muddy.

This is very typical for Mary. She had hated the dry weather recently because she’s just been dusty instead of completely clarty. She chooses to sleep in mud pits that she digs out herself…

She ends up wearing some kind of rug (at this time of year at least a fly rug) year round just so I can get a saddle on her without her being completely soaked in wet mud!
