grey horses

With the grand national going on, i was just wondering why are most of the horses brown / dark brown (bay? is that the right word) and not may grey ones and have never need a palimino? is it to do with the breed of the horse?

Just wondering really, know nothing of horses!!

Not sure about all thoroughbred descending from 1 grey stallion, but its all down to genetics re the Palamino - TB`s do not carry the cream gene and therefore cannot produce a palamino which is a chestnut with 1 instance of the cream gene.
 
Basically, those are the only colours thoroughbreds come in! And I think it's just coincidence that there are more bays and chestnuts then greys - Perhaps they have common winning ancestors?
