Beauty has what I can only describe as black dandruff, It is flaky. Originally it was only on her rump but when she escaped from her stable last night and spent her time walking round the yard in the rain its on her sides and along her spine. I first thought rain scald but it doesn't look like that.

is she black skinned or white? how big is the dandruff? if we're talking small particles of dust like dandruff then I wouldn't worry too much, mine had that recently then proceeded to shed her coat preparing for her winter one very early in the season like so many on our yard. Give her a good groom with a rubber curry comb and a bath and see how it is then. What's her coat like? is it dull and dry or shiny and glossy? If dull and dry it may be she needs some oil adding to her diet - linseed is particularly good. If hair is falling out then might be worth calling your vets and discussing it with them.

I wouldn't worry. As a grey, she'll be dark skinned so the flakes are almost certainly just part of the normal skin particles that get shed all the time. As some horses are already growing their winter coats (you don't want to know about my 2 shetties) it's perhaps just a little more noticeable at the moment.
