Hello, I'm new to this bit of the forum. I have a greyhound who is healthy and seems happy. He has always had thin fur on his hind legs/thighs, but is getting increasingly bald. The last time he saw the vet he said not to worry. He is getting more bald. I was going to mention it to the vet again, but wondered if anyone had any thoughts. His tummy is also bald, its the bits that could be worn out by the carpet, but this seems strange.

What age is he? Is it falling out, is he removing it, or could it be wear from lying in the same place in the same way all the time?

What do you feed him? Could be a food intolerance or an allergy to the surface he is lying on, his bed, carpet, or contact with human skin cells etc?
 
I have a lurcher who is similarish. To give an idea of his coat, people always ask if hes an Irish Wolf Hound???
His coat is quite long, looks thick but is actually very fine and he has an almost bald stomach and the hair on his thighs has rubbed away, not to baldness but very short. I tell my hubby off for rubbing his belly as I was convinced he was rubbing the hair away but I think thats just how his hair is. His legs though I think have rubbed away from when he lies down. He always sleeps on something soft unless hes hot when he will lie on the laminate.
 
Dont worry it is quite normal for greyhounds

They havent got a lot of body fat obviously, so their fur tends to 'wear' when they come into contact with hard surfaces etc

My 6 1/2 year old black greyhound is pretty much bald underneath, but my 3 year old is only patchy at the moment

The condition you describe is called BTS (Bald Thigh Syndrome - although it can affect other areas like the tummy/throat) As Cayla says, nothing to worry about. Various theories abound as to the cause of it. Stress is one theory.

Yes, I am almost certain that it is "wearing out" rather than falling out. There is no hair on the floor/bed.
I will keep an eye on it - it has got worse since we moved, perhaps the surfaces he lays on are rougher? His bed is soft but there is carpet in the lounge.
