Well, I know who I would put my money on in a race

Whereas when they are dumped in England/Wales/Scotland (hmmm, not sure about Scotland actually) they are rescued and put into rescue kennels ad infinitum until the poor bu**gers find a home or die of old age or illness

As I have said above, I do not have a problem with euthanasia, but greyhound rescue organisations over here seem to get very distressed about it and say that they 'must rescue these dogs' at all costs

To me, the Irish solution is the practical one harsh as it seems

Quoted from a rescue site, an R.I.P. over the Rottweiler Ricky.

[ QUOTE ]
On Thursday 1st October we sadly lost our lovely Ricky to cancer. Ricky was a wonderful rottie with a character all of his own. Unfortunately the right home never came up for him so he remained here in kennels with us for nearly 3 years.

We will all miss you dearly Ricky.Till we meet again one day.

Reading that and e.g. about the large old bitch who was posted about a while ago, 10 years old and had spent 2 years in rescue without finding the right new home. Considering the list of requirements on a new potential home for her, I doubt she will die in a home of her own without will also have spent her last years in a kennel.

Just catching up, was out at the ballet last night - no really, Matthew Bournes Swan Lake, second time of seeing it and can thoroughly recommend. All the swans are topless and MALE!
Anyway, don't want to reopen this "debate" but a couple of quick points, I didn't say I wouldn't sign, just that I wanted to read more about it, as Finny points out sometimes well meaning animal lovers can do untold damage to animal welfare by blindly petitioning.
And as already stated, couldn't agree more that it is far better imo for some dogs to be pts than kept in kennels for ages waiting for a home. My late mum had made her wishes clear that when she passed away if I wasn't able to have her elderly GSD she was to be pts. (Of course I did keep her and she had a happy old age until 14 years).
