I have a rescue greyhound - we have had him for about 6 weeks.
When we got him he was very skinny.
He has put on a lot of weight but still needs a little more covering over his ribs according to the vet which is fine.

However I seem to have got the weight on him to a point which was easy but now he has stopped putting it on, even although he needs a little more.

Any suggestions from other greyhound owners - what do you feed yours etc?

I have greyhounds, but at the moment I am not sure what I will be feeding them - see my post above, one has giardia at the moment so we need to sort that out

I am then going to change his diet to something for sensitive stomachs as he is getting older now.

My younger (5 year old) rescue greyhound gets Countrywide Premium Dog Food (an all in one) but I wouldnt really recommend that for weight gain

Royal Canin do some good all-in-ones which mine love BUT BEWARE - introduce them GRADUALLY as they are rich and can upset the stomach easily!

Or try asking on http://thehoundlounge.proboards105.com/ - they are lovely people, I have joined recently and they have been really helpful about greyhound stuff

Oh - ETS - Islay (who I got in May) is actually quite skinny by most people's standards - she has a good covering along her topline and neck, but not over her ribs. After worming her and checking with the vet we have concluded that this is just her natural construction! If I feed her more she gets stuffy and cresty around her neck and shoulders, rather than putting weight on her ribs. Just something to consider - not saying yours wouldnt put more weight on, but some greyhounds are just that shape

I think as long as he's eating well and putting on weight steadily, I wouldn't worry. Do you have a coat for him?
He might appreciate one when he's out walking and this
can also help with him keeping weight on.
I think we also need some pics

Do post some pics on here of him - or have I missed some?

It usually takes them a couple of months to look good again - Islay was really fat when I got her, and did a massive massive moult as she had always lived in kennels and wasnt used to a house

But now she is sleek, black and shiny

My whippey x greyhound is hard to keep weight on and my deerhound, I feed chudleys working crunch, with a little meat mixed in and a slurp of vegie oil, as suggested by acolyte, gradual is the way to go if u change food.

I have a rescue saluki lurcher who I cannot get weight onto (I've had him 8 years), I took him to the vets in the end because I was worried and he ran a whole battery of tests which all came up normal, in the end he told me that some dogs are naturally thin and you cannot fight the type, plus a lighterweight dog is healthier as less stress on joints, heart etc. He's now 11 and still going very strong and is not giving up the sofa to anyone!
