Greyhound racing to be banned in Wales

Labour ministers say the sport - which has one track in Wales - will be banned as soon as possible.

Looks to be on its way but unspecified timescale.

I worry about what will happen to the dogs along the way. Sure some responsible breeders and trainers will rehome or work with the rescue organisations, but I am sure that there are those who will do god knows what with them. The GBGB statement doesn't fill me with hope on that.

These rehoming groups cannot rehome all the current greyhounds coming off the track, there are only so many homes available.

This and the fact GBGB have some ridiculous schemes supposedly in aid of rehoming greyhounds currently that mean some are stuck in rescues along with not being able to get spaces....

I don't know what the numbers are but I do wonder what percentage of the 'waste' from the industry the rescues are able to help. We got a mixed story for what happened to Ivy and we'll probably never know for sure, but I am sure that not all of them make it out of racing smoothly.

Their statement in the article didn't give me much hope that they would work in collaboration with other rescue/rehoming organisations, so I hope they have a good alternative!
 
My understanding is that greyhounds who aren't rehomed and whose owners don't want to pay a vet (or can't find one willing to euthanize a healthy animal) are shot? A quick, clean death is very far from the worst thing that can happen to any animal. If several thousand greyhound currently in training die early to prevent the hundreds of thousands that would otherwise come after them, then sad as it is, they won't have died in vain.

Greyhounds really do make lovely pets. I know a few and would love to have one one day. Hope there are some good rehoming campaigns. Not too energetic generally good on the lead can sometimes live with cats etc. excellent with children. Minimal shedding. Adorable.

I think some end up dumped and others get shipped off to goodness knows where.

I am not in general against euthanasia and I agree that humane PTS is not the worst thing to happen to an animal, but the thought of this happening on such a large scale is incredibly distressing.

Quite a few racing greyhounds find their way to other countries such as China. There are fates worse than death for them.

I doubt it, the GBGB have affiliated rehoming centres with restrictive rules, I also know of one trainer in the North that recently travelled a dog down to wales (the irony) as that was the only rehoming space he could find

Having had dealings with the GBGB over welfare issues I have no confidence in them, they are basically run by ARC and Star (who own the race tracks)
