Has anyone rehomed a Greyhound? Im thinking about doing it but would love to hear experiences from other people.
There is another (very energetic!) dog here so hopefully i'll be able to find one who gets on with others. I was also hoping to get an older male greyhound.
Also would love to hear whick organisations you got yours from. I live in East Anglia and would prefere to rehomeone from a relatively local organisation.

Hmmm, I fear I might be perceived as a little obsessed about rescue greyhounds on the AAD forum, I cannot imagine why :rolleyes:

Yes I have had seven rescue lurchers and greyhounds now (not all at the same time!), I got them all from www.grwe.com (but I am not sure they cover your area) except my latest one Amy who I got from Cayla on here :D

They are absolutely fantastic dogs to have around, and I wouldnt have (or want) any other breed now except perhaps for a rescue whippet :) They are clean, laid back, easy to have around, do not have any "doggy smell", are non-aggresive, get on well with pretty much every other breed, do not require loads of exercise.....I could (and do) go on for hours :D

If you contact a good rescue organisation they will find you something which will exactly match your needs - good with children, good with cats, good with rabbits etc - it is really really worth taking your time and getting the 'right' greyhound, nothing distresses me more than dogs being taken back into kennels after they have been re-homed because the owners grabbed the first one they saw :( Not suggesting you would do that at all of course!

Also try to have as few pre-conceived ideas about sex, colour and size as you can.... when I got Flick (in my sig) I was looking for a big brindle and white dog and ended up with a tiny black and white bitch :D Black greyhounds are very very common in rescue and for some reason are quite difficult to rehome, I have no idea why as to me there is nothing more beautiful than a black greyhound with a gorgeous glossy, shiny coat :)

If you have any particular questions then fire away, as everyone will testify I am happy to talk greyhounds for hours :o and there are many others on here who also have them who are just as enthusiastic :D

My present three are in my signature - Islay and Amy are the two black ones, Flick is the white and black one :) The other two are Jura (brindle) and Talisker (fawn), both of whom I lost in 2008
 
I have a six year old male rescue Greyhound and it's the best thing I have ever done.....nothing really to add to CareyR, as she is the one to talk too on this subject!!!!:D

But Cliff is amazing and he gets on with everyone and everything.

Here's the Retired Greyhound Trust Branch list and Kerry Greyhounds also has a base in Norfolk. The RGT branches are run independently so can vary a bit on adoption policies/procedures etc, just thought i'd mention in case the 1st one you try isn't right for you.

I adopted my 2 boys from a local RGT branch, although they'd not got a space at the groups kennels yet so were still with their local trainer. Unless the dogs been returned from a home or fostered there is a bit of extra work in the beginning (like house training, stairs, socialising etc) as most groups will advise, but most dogs adapt to their new life quickly and as a dog owner already i doubt it would be an issue.

I'm sure you'll be able to find a greyhound that will get on with current dog, a lot of adopters already have a dog or even cat at home. My boys get on well with all breeds of dogs, but not so keen on cats. You may be better off looking for a younger or just more playful minded hound if your current dog is energetic.

I have 1/2 an ex racing Greyhound! he lives with my Mum and Stepdad as they are around all the time and we work but he's very much a family dog.

We've had him about 6months and he is funny thing, he has the hall to himself where he has a bed and he treats this as his kennel! he comes out and is friendly but then retreats back after about five minutes - he is an absolute angel with my two small boys (although he looks quite 'pained' whenever they make a loud noise) he is scared of his own shadow and has absolutely no recall!! He's fine with cats but killed a bird a few weeks ago.

He's about 8yo and we adore him, I don't think I would ever get another breed now :D :D :)

I have a greyhound. He wasn't a racer but who wasn't a very good pet either!
Hes a lovely boy, good with kids, other dogs, people. Not so good with cats etc but thats just him. I lvoe him to pieces and I wouldn't be without a greyhound anymore. He is a special dog and allowed into the local pet shop because the ladies in there love him.

I only have two words to say which are:


DOOOOOOOOOOO ITTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!
 
Not sure where abouts you are based but someone I used to be in the Pony Club with rehomes Greyhounds in/around Cambridge - haven't got her card with me atm but from memory its called Trinity Greyhounds (?) contact Sara Wallwin 07956 052966. When I find her card I'll but email details etc on. Whilst I haven't got Greyhounds I do have two lurchers (Whip/Bed) - wonderful loving dogs who do anything for a cuddle - great ratters too!!
