Has anyone here ever worked with Greyhounds? I'm thinking of applying to a job as a kennel hand..duties include cleaning kennels, walking greyhounds and also helping training them! I don't know a lot about racing greyhounds, but as dogs I love them!

I'm just not suited to office work!

I worked at a greyhound coursing kennel, for about 18 months. The dogs are wonderful. The job was great. We had about 60 dogs in training and puppies as well. My day was 8.00am til 4.00pm. I was super fit, as coursing dogs need stamina as well as speed, so need to go for long power walks. (Racing kennels are different)
Day started with cleaning kennels and turning dogs out in turn, then breakfast.
Then all dogs to have free time outside, while dogs in training are walked/galloped/groomed/massaged
Lunch break
Dinner time followed by afternoon turnout, more dogs exercised, groomed etc.
Pups exercised, which could be hilarious depending on number of said babies
General cleaning duties and mass bowl washing.
Everyone to bed, lock up. Finish
I really loved this job, and when you get taken to meetings to watch your babies run, it is wonderful. The job is physical, and demanding but very rewarding.
Of course, there are some sad times too. When you lose a dear friend it is heartbreaking.
If you decide to follow this path good luck. What kind of work were you thinking of??????

the fall out from the Greyhound 'industry' is horrendous

- can't remember the exact figure but something like 15,000 dogs are killed EVERY YEAR ! and many more are sold abroad to race in the blistering heat of the Spanish race tracks and then finally are hung from trees rather than 'waste' the cost of a bullet - the whole dog racing fraternity needs to get it's house in order and take responsibility for every pup that they breed instead of killing them en masse or dumping them on our already over stretched rescue centres when they dont 'make the grade.

And don't think about what happens to the ones
that don't make the grade, recieve injuries etc.

Thats right poor things

Not a job i could do!!

When i worked with them, it wasn't that awful. Saying that the coursing scene is much different to the track.
My boss was sound too, he would rather find a family home for a dog when it's career was over, or some would even come and live in his house. He would rather have a dog PTS than send it to a horrible fate somewhere else.

Of course as everyone else has said. It is sadly mostly not the case, and many, many dogs suffer because of this industry.
