Greying out - what affects the rate?

I'm interested in what you think changes the rate a horse greys out at, because they can vary so much. Do you think it's genetics, breed or anything else?

Also, how quickly did yours grey out, and what stages did it go though to get there? Photos most appreciated!

I love dapple greys - I'd be interested to know if certain breeds retain their dapples longer

I think it really depends on the horse tbh.
This is mine at 5yrs with no dapples;

Then as a 6yr old going dappley;

Then dappley at 7yrs;

Only 3yrs of difference there so dont no weather that helps lol ... but i know people with white 6yr olds so all depends on the horse

My 2 yr old filly (this year).

Her sire (also this year)

They are both genetically chestnut (born chestnut) with one copy of the grey gene.

Can't answer this as I have appaloosas and the grey gene is something we strive to keep out of the breed but would suggest you post your thread on BREEDING as there are lots of other threads regarding colour and genetics on there.

all of the young connemara's ive seen go white quite early in life, not sure on other breeds though.

Genetics alone... nothing you can do to speed it up or slow it down...

Can't answer this as I have appaloosas and the grey gene is something we strive to keep out of the breed but would suggest you post your thread on BREEDING as there are lots of other threads regarding colour and genetics on there.

Echo the comment rr appaloosas, the last thing wanted in them is the greying out! There has been in the past some indiscriminate breeding (and in fact I had to explain to the owner of a grey ango arab stallion rather forcefully, why I didn't want her horse anywhere near the Old Appy mare!).
We have had a welsh a who greyed out in her teens and a IDx who appears to get darker as she gets older (mind you that might just be mud related )
