Griffin nuumed/thermatex

Oh no! I only purchased a Griffin saddle pad a few weeks ago and its lovely. I also had plans to one day buy a thermatex for new mare in the colours I want rather than what comes up second hand for once :( How sad.

Noooo… I was in a lengthy back and forth via email trying to get a new thermatex ordered but then dragged my feet 😭 it’s true, you snooze you lose

It didn't help that the website has not been functioning for do long and people had to make a real effort to email to order.

I've got a few pieces bought in seconds sales which I will hang onto

I think part of the problem is their stuff was too good. My thermatex is 20 years old and pretty much immaculate. My older one is 30 years old and inherited and apart from replacing some straps and a few scuffs in the fabric is in great condition. Expensive but if you look after it you only buy once....

Sadly I fear you are right.
Possibly combined with the market also flooded with cheaper blingy trash.

Very sad to loose a British company producing proper high end products ….. that last!

This was released on a local tack shops FB page, surely this can't be true??

Important Update on Charles Owen UK Production
It is with deep regret that I must share the extremely difficult decision to cease UK production of Charles Owen products as of next month.
This decision comes as a result of our lease expiring on the premises we currently occupy. Despite strong commitments earlier this year that we would be able to remain, those assurances have sadly not materialised. Although we have secured a short extension, it only allows us to continue operations until 19th December, less than six weeks from now.
Those who have visited our facility will understand the complexity involved in producing our helmets - the volume of equipment and machinery is significant. Decommissioning, dismantling, relocating, and recommissioning this operation is a major logistical challenge. While we do have several potential new locations under consideration it will not be possible to maintain production.
We have set a cut-off date for new orders of this Friday, 14th November. We will continue to draw from our existing stock of raw materials and sub-assemblies to fulfil as many orders as possible before 19th December. While we will make every effort to meet all commitments, some shortfalls may occur, but we will work hard to minimise any shortages.
I apologise sincerely for the short notice. As you will appreciate, securing a new long term lease has been our top priority for some time. However, we have exhausted every option to avoid this outcome, unfortunately we have reached a point where this decision has had to be made.
We do have stock of key Charles Owen lines ready for despatch, and we will circulate a full stock list to help you place your orders. This stock will be allocated predominantly on a first come first served basis, but we will ensure fair distribution at all times.
Please note that this development does not impact our outsourced product lines. Kylo, Phoenix, Kontor, Shadow, Eclipse, as well as all accessories are not affected. We also remain on track with our exciting new products - the Hyda helmet and Hexa body protector, both due to launch in 2026 - supported by a strong forward order book.
The Sales and Customer Service teams are on hand to assist with your questions and orders, but if I could ask for your patience and understanding while we navigate through this unique and unfortunate situation that would be much appreciated.
Thank you in advance for your support during this challenging transition.

That sucks I love nuumed numnahs!. Need to check what I have and get one or two if they are old.

Charles Owen - by the looks of it maybe they're just stopping UK production, I'm guessing moving production elsewhere? Sad but probably won't affect sales of products much?

How do the rugs come up size wise? I’ve always wanted one so will keep an eye out for any second hand. My ID is normally 6ft9

Very sad :(

I love my OG Thernatex but particularly love the Thermatex saddlepads & numnah's. Thankfully, I've built a bit of a collection but v.sad to think I'll no longer be able to buy any new.

My understanding was that it was only certain hats that are being produced abroad so I don't think CO will have their full selection?

Very sad to lost Thermatex and Nuumed, I'm guessing this is probably Jeffries too? Looking at their website their bridles aren't on there only some saddles.

Thermatex and Nuumed are a huge loss. It's so sad to lose quality british products. I have a 25 year old thermatex that is still as good as new.

I also saw a post re riding hats saying how much of a loss CO british production is as although all hats have passed the safety standards there are huge differences between the cheap foreign made hats and something like the british made CO hats. Don't know if it is true but it wouldn't surprise me if it is.

Just not true. Gatehouse are made in China. Have SNELL etc. Only Champion still manufactured in UK now. Charles Owen had 60% of their range UK and 40% in China. Samsheild is made in France, Shires in China and KEP in Italy. A standard is a standard. But not all standards are the same....

Take Samsheild. Made in France, very expensive and consistently the worst in safety tests!!

Nail on head.

What is the connection between these two photos apart from the fact that I took both photos and own(ed) both horses? The one in the snow was taken in circa 1985 (and has featured in Horse and Hound magazine) and the other photo was taken this morning.

Answer - it’s the same thermatex rug in both photos, being used as an under rug in the snow pic 🙂.

Love this! If only rugs these days lasted so well!

I had a dig around in the loft today and I have 2 sets of thermatex leg wraps up there and a bunch of nuumed numnahs but no saddle pads so I did order a couple of nuumed ones. They're just superior! Sad times.
