My friend's horse who I ride for her constantly grinds his teeth when being ridden. He's about 13, tb ex racehorse. He was quite skinny when she got him but is slowly putting weight on, he paws the ground, weaves, tries to bite (generally just a very unaffectionate horse), hates being groomed, tosses his head and grinds and leans on the bit when ridden, and isn't very forward going at all. Can be awkward to get into an outline and did have a little bit of a sore back. He has ad-lib haylage and gets fed hi-fi lite, conditioning cubes, calmer.

I've heard about grinding teeth, pawing the ground, not being forward going and having a sore back as all signs of ulcers, and obv that tb's are quite prone to them. Do you think he might have ulcers or just a very stressy horse?? He's had both his back and teeth done recently.

Any help will be v gratefully received!!

Thanks x

Grinding teeth is generally a way in which horses show their upset, discomfort or annoyance. The horse may or may not have ulcers however if as you say, he is an ex-racer then typically many do.

Yep that's what I thought. I think I'll suggest she gets the vet out to check. He reminds me of my friends ex racer who was the nastiest horse until she found out she had ulcers, got them treated and then she was so much nicer afterwards!

I agree. Its a sign of stress and you have to work through a process of elimination to find out the cause (teeth, saddle, rider, pain, ulcers and so on!)
