Lift your whole leg off the saddle from your hip, push legs back then let them hang with your thigh muscle flat on the saddle.

Agree - it feels weird to start. My Daughter and I have both been having lessons with a lady who makes us do this as soon as tension creeps in. I wonder what people think when they see us hacking out and periodically lifting our legs away looking like we are about to give a thwacking great big pony club kick!
