I might consider replacing my traditional stainless steel bend leg stirrups since I seem to have developed a dreadful habit of losing them half round a SJ course! Looking for lightweight, grippy treaded stirrups but with a safety release type aspect (be it their shape or that they bend etc.). I know you can spend a fortune these days on stirrups but I dont want to spend much so budget ones ideally! I've seen the Shires ones but they dont look to have any foot release.

I've got a pair of mountain horse scs3 stirrups for sale that may meet your needs apart from they're very heavy!

The SCS3's are not permitted in some competitions - I think because of their weight. If you get clonked on the head with one as you fall you will certainly know about it!

You can get what are called cheese grater treads for any stirrup iron which at about £5 a pair might make a good first try? They replace the rubber pad with a metal tread like a cheese grater and are more grippy.

From there stirrups start to get expensive and not all types suit all riders. Freejumps are the classic "marmite" stirrups - love them or hate them. So try a pair before you buy as they are ridiculously expensive. Personally I like the Sprenger bow balance - with cheese graters for XC although not for SJ - as they seem to have a good impact on lower leg position and are really safe. But there are loads of others.
