I have a 10 month old foal and he is always getting grit up his white line. I have had a think about it, and it seems to be just after he gets his feet trimmed but don't know if that is just a coincidence. My farrier suggested putting shoes on him, but I don't want to as he is only 10 months!
Anybody got any ideas?

Thanks!

Hi my pony gets this all the time too and i was advised to put him on magnesium oxide because it tightens the white line, its definately worked! it might be worth putting him on a fibre /oil diet as that may help too.the barefoot experts on here will be best for helping -im just learning about it all. my pony has EMS and changing his management has worked wonders for him.:)

Why would he want to shoe a ten month old?

Pm Oberon or Cp (phone wont lets spell the rest of her name:o) they will go e you lots of help

My mare can get this on her hind feet as she is not shod behind, my farrier said use a wire brush to brush the dirt away everyday then squirt a milton soloution around the white line it will help stop any infection a few times a week.

is this grit causing problems or is it just there? my horse gets little stones up there, i just pick his feet out everyday and ping them back out again, admittidly there are sometimes quite tough to get out and a hand friendly hoofpick would be nice.

At the moment he is lame, again! It keeps going into abcesses.

thats a bit more of an issue then, wonder if there is something you could use to stop them getting up there rather than a shoe, especially on a baby I would be very concerned about a shoe at that age.

Its a pain in the backside to be blunt! I usually get the vet to trim away but this time I thought I would just poultice it without trimming it as he was getting to the stage that you couldn't touch his foot with out him rearing and he had been so good getting his feet picked out.
Just looking for ideas. I had been told the only way round it was to keep him off the field!!

It might be worth giving him Prohoof or the Forage Plus summer balancer. Both have a good balance of minerals including copper. Either should help to tighten up the white line and prevent further abcessing

10 months is way too young for shoes :-(

I swear there is some sort of paste for this? Argh I can't remember what it was, sorry! I'm convinced I read somewhere (on a thread with a similar topic) that people filled the gaps with something. I may have to hunt around later!

I'm getting this problem now :( although a wire brush helps to scrape the stones out.

Artimud is quite good for filling the gaps, problem I find is as u pick out the stones you get a wider gap which in turns collects bigger stones. Hence now use boots on front which is shame as otherwise has good feet.

There is another filler which is wax based that works well, but hard to use when cold, atriums has tea tree oil in which helps stop infections

This can be caused by a deficiency in copper ,it will improve with a good vitamin /mineral supplement or young stock balancer Baileys do a stud balancer, low calorie high nutrient pellet, well worth a look.

All the wet weather we had throughout the majority of last year gave My horse had an extremely deep abcess back in September (danger time for the grass and he's barefoot too, but on a BF diet and has been for some 2 and a half years now).., Turns out it was a double one! (it had tried to come out, failed and tried again at another point directly underneath it, so when the farrier took a look and started to par the sole away (and extremely carefully i might add), he found the old abcess and the newer one trying to make it's way out of his sole and very near to his outside quarter/white line.

Some three weeks on and off later we eradicated it and fingers crossed have been good since. However this double abcess left quite a large hole and damaged his white line in that area so the WL doesn't run uniformly round the outer rim of his sole at the moment, it has a bit of a 'bubble' in it if that makes sense!! Some 8 months on and with the normal hoof growth the hole has shrunk alot, however we still have a hole. I appreciate you're looking at 12 months for a new hoof in effect, so we're getting there!

I've been keeping my eye on it and packing it with hoof putty to discourage the grit and stones going in there. Although it's inevitable that he picks up the small stones and they squash into the putty, i've actually been inclined to leaving them be as nothing else will/can get in there while to hoof putty is still intact. I do however, clean/flush out with milton or tea tree and re-pack when need. It works for us so far. He's sound as a pound (as of course i would remove if he wasn't).

he's due for a trim this week so after this our hole should be even smaller by the end of the week!

It was one whopper of a double abcess and his soles are very thick to the extent that the farrier commented and said 'flippin' 'eck,...that was like performing micro surgery'!!
