Groom / Rider needed - Best place to advertise for quick response?

We need to advertise for a groom / rider, and ideally need someone to start as soon as poss - where would you recommend? Are sites like yardandgroom any good? Or is it best to use H&H mag?

I've always advertised in the local newspaper in the horsey section and in the jobs section (Yorkshire Post and Shropshire Star) and have always been innundated with replies. Some have been timewasters, but I have always ended up with 3-4 people who sounded good enough on the phone to interview and more than one person to chose from in the end.

OK so yardandgroom or careergrooms - which gets people's vote?

I have always looked for p/t grooms, but I don't think that will make a huge difference. For example, the groom I have now has been with me for two years, she is extremely reliable, very kind with the horses, working towards her stage III, has no problem riding the cob and the youngster and I can trust her without any worries. She has a couple of other p/t jobs, one at a stud (has handled foals and ridden youngsters) and also teaching at a local riding school, so I would say she is quite experienced. I found her through an advert in the Shropshire Star, and initially we had about 45 replies (!!). It does take a while to work through all the messages, but after the first few you figure out what questions to ask first to avoid the timewasters (my favourites are: Do you have a car? How far away from us do you live? Advert stated where we were, but we still got some people who were three hours away!).

I have just advertised for the same position on www.gumtree.com. I got a great response and its free to advertise! Found someone really local and nice very quickly.

It's based in Salisbury, not USA, though it is quite USA-orientated. Change the country to UK and there are still loads of jobs and people looking for work on there

I would go for yardandgroom, found my job on there and there are lots of jobseekers to look at too. I don't like the idea of Career Grooms as you have to call them in London instead of being able to contact the yard/jobseeker directly like you can on yardandgroom, saving time IMO.

I know a yard just up the road from me that have a couple of grooms from Career Grooms but they didnt last that long. They semed to be straight out of college without much hands on experience. I know this doesn't apply to everyone but it did to the ones they picked! I would put experience over qualifications anyday,I just cant stand the college kids
