Hi guys,

Possibly in a position to be looking for a groom, 5 /6 days a week, mobile home accommodation, own horse on livery. Backing/reschooling work, as well as competition riding (local RC). Sole charge.

What is the going Rate now?

Was thinking £300 does that sound right?

Ok, so that's a bit high then! Isn't anything comparable on yard and groom but thx!

No training

Is £250 more sensible?

Gross wage of £300, then deductions for tax & NI, accom, horse keep & a specified training session weekly/monthly.
That will be a good wage - and most helpful to any employee if they need to move on in the future, or perish the thought - have to take time off sick :)

Thanks but there is no training supplied

Is there a HMRC rate for accom? For keep of horse would you include DIY, hay and bedding as they would be the one mucking out!

I would say that's a great wage, I get the same but I don't live in and can't keep my horses there but I get all my training. Plus I get a % in horses that have been sold and % of any winnings(on horses I ride for them)and I get to keep money from clipping etc. it's great in winter time having the extra money for Xmas!

Personally I think 300 is fine it's nice to see someone not wanting something for nothing plus it's hard work . I think pay a bit more and you will get someone decent who will stay with you and you will probably get more work out of them as they will feel there not doing something for nothing .

There is a figure for accommodation deductions which is the maximum you can offset against accommodation to count towards the National Minimum Wage. Its quite complicated but if you google accommodation offset there is Government advice on it.

What hours is the groom to work ?
Is it five or six days .( it might be best to do one day off and two afternoons in winter)
You need to be very clear about this before you start interviewing people .
Also make sure you are clear about exactly how much extra it's costing you with NI etc added employers insurance etc.
How are you going to deal with electricity and gas etc for the mobile home is it already on site if not how much is it going to cost to get it sited and to buy and to put the services into ( no good groom will live in a leaky damp mobile home with a bucket under for a drain anymore )
You need to have clear rules about the own horse., what happens about its bedding food when the grooms away etc managing all that can be quite hard work.
The best way i have seen this work is to this is to give a longer lunch hour a bit of it unpaid to allow the groom to ride.
How many horses are on the yard ? The amount of work needs to realistic.

Planning as well you will need planning permission for a staff mobile this can be a Protracted performance and even impossible a friend with a twenty horse yard was unable to get permission and was told the groom should live with the family .
So I would speak to the council about this as a first step if permission does not already exist .

just noticed this, sorry to hijack your thread, but i get paid 600euro a month for 6 days a week, on fridays i can work form 7am to 11pm and sundays can be 4am to really late too, this comes with accommodation and dinner... this doesn't include training, competition fees or livery for my own horse... am i getting underpaid or am i being simple?

600 Euros a month? So just over £500? That sounds a bit too little for a six-day week, especially with a 16-hour day or two in there and no keep or anything for your horse...

You need to find out what you are being charged for your keep. You should be getting at least minimum wage which is currently 21 and over £6.31,18 - 20 £5.03, under 18 £3.72. If you aren't getting that then yes , you are being underpaid. You can phone for advice from the Pay and Work Rights Helpline on Tel 0800 917 2368. Lines are open from 8.00 am to 8.00 pm, Monday to Friday and 9.00 am to 1.00 pm, Saturday.
