Groomers - A Question

Sorry if this is a really dumb question, but....

Is it acceptable to take a dirty dog to the groomers, i.e dog walked just beforehand so rather muddy.
 
Im no groomer but wouldnt dream of clipping a horse before making sure it had been groomed thoroughly otherwise you would b****r up your clippers, if its a bit of mud splashed up then rub over with a towel and a quick brush. It just shows a bit of consideration for the groomer really.
 
Not a great idea.
We ask that the dogs come in dry where possible.if we have muddy dogs in they end up being caged until dry(full close clip offs are our most common business so towel off mud then work away)or of very bad washed and dryed before clipping and washed again after(not great for sensitive skin or those who hate the dryers)

Mud destroys clippers and blades.i use clippers on cows for c sections(roughly 2 a week)so muds often there and go through blades much faster than the girls doing grooming daily.
 
I always thought that dogs got bathed anyway before they were groomed? Not that I have ever had a dog clipped but our border used to have a bath when she went in to be stripped.
 
Your dog is a bichon so it would be washed and dried before any clipping took place...so yes I'd not object to a dirty dog...my breed is poodle,so same rules apply.If the dog was wire haired..eg terrier,he'd be brushed to remove mud before stripping coat,then washed afterwards in a suitable shampoo to close the pores.
 
Well yes, Bellasophia, that was my thinking - she'd be washed immediately upon arrival. But I was worried about the consideration angle tbh.
 
I would respect the clients wishes as best I could if it were not going to compromise the groom.I would say you are paying the bill and the dog would be pre bathed anyway .in fact I've never ever clipped a poodle type breed without a bath...only to remove excess long coat,but not to do the serious groom.
If your dog is seriously muddy,the groomer will hose her down first on the bath,then proceed to shampoo etc..no big deal.
I can understand Aru,as a vet,is going to do a very close clip ,possibly prior to surgery ...or due to a sanitation issue...in that case mud would both compromise the clipper blades and blunt them and also be unsanitary.
 
No it is not according to the groomers i trailed at and they made a big fuss about that. Groomers have a set time usually 30mins to wash and blowdry, which is much harder if the dog is filthy. A dirty dog can hold them up and cost them time and money if they have to cancel a slot because they haven't got time. Many dogs get a brush before the wash, cause there is no point washing dead hair and clogging the drains.

Im a pro groomer and we bath and blow dry every dog before any groom. I actually prefer a dog to come in dirty as suggests dog has had a good run and done its business :)
 
I wash and dry every dog that comes in so a bit wet or dirty is not a problem unless it's a terrier being handstripped (I do not wash these unless absolutely necessary to avoid post grooming furunculosis).

I sometimes get annoyed if someone brings me a filthy dog - on purpose so they get their money's worth LOL -- but what they don't understand is that as a groomer I want a perfectly squeaky clean dog to scissor and clip - that means on a very dirty dog it can take several (I mean 7 or 8?!) washes with a high powered bathing system. Then before the next dog can go in to the bath (and this is between every groom) the bath is sanitised - so if I have to clean it down due to grit and grime still being present it just adds to the time. So I add that time spent on to the grooming bill. So the "getting the money's worth" doesn't quite work out.

As Irishdan says though, I like a happy content walked dog - so a bit wet and dirty - not a problem -- its going in the bath first anyway.

But coming in carrying half the bog in their curls...just expect to pay for that ;)

Hahaha, you might not - but trust me I've got plenty that do :p

Something to bear in mind with grooming, you will get some who don't mind and some who do. The ones that do are either lazy or perfectionists. That ones that don't mind are probably just gluttons for punishment! ha!
