I'd be really grateful for any tips here!

I have a dog approx 11 months old with a long coat. It had been cut before I took her on as it was matted to high heaven, and I have since been growing it back out. I only trim the hair under her feet and round her bottom and I WILL NOT clip her- she would look ridiculous (I know what she looks like wet). Anyway...

She is blowing her puppy coat.

She's losing it slowly, but is still hard work to groom! It takes me an hour to comb her every night and I get handfuls of fluff out. The topcoat is very fine, dry and wavy; the undercoat is incredibly dense and soft. The worst areas are the fronts of her forelegs as they seem to be pure fluff, and the area at the base of her tail where the hair is thicker than anywhere else.

So, what do you think I should be using to groom her? And how best to do it? Bearing in mind how dense her coat is and that a brush with fairly long pins doesn't get right through it! In fact, I struggle with a long toothed, wide comb! And how long does puppy-coat blow normally last in long-coated breeds (Beardies, OES etc.)?

Any wonder products, brush advice, grooming advice etc very gratefully received- and here's a pic of the fluff monster herself (although her coat is quite a bit longer now!)

The photos don't really do her justice- it really is quite a beautiful coat and I really would like to keep it that way!

Thanks for that- I have one already (and a matt splitter) for the cocker; although her coat has improved no end since changing her diet and giving them both Starflower oil daily. To be honest, the mongrel doesn't really get matts as she is brushed daily but just loads of dead puppy fluff! And I'm probably using the wrong slicker brush or not doing it right, because it doesn't get through her fur.

I also have an undercoat rake which is about the best thing for the fluffball's coat. I would just love to find a good brush which would do it quicker, and get mud out, encourage circulation in the skin and improve the coat condition as well (don't want much, do I?)

the best brushes are made by Mason Pearson and cost an arm and a leg but are fantastic. She looks to be either a Tibetan Terrier perhaps a Briard cross and these breeds do have LOADS of coat. Look on the Dezyna Dog website for their coat detangling spray and spray this ( or a similar product) all over then use a slicker brush where the needles are slighly pointed back and use this to brush against the lie of the coat - do this all over then brush with a bristle brush along the lie of the coat . Use a combination comb for her rear end , the front of her legs and behind her ears - adding more spray so that you don't have to pull at any knots - you will need to keep on top of the grooming - at least twice thoroughly per week- so that matts do not have a chance to form.

Thank you very much! I use a Mason Pearson brush on my own hair so I know they're worth the money- I'll have a look for something appropriately heavy duty. I do have a vast array of brushes, combs, slickers etc. (none of which is making the job particularly easy); I'm a bit of a grooming product junkie I suppose; it comes from keeping two hairy dogs in full coat. Thanks for the tips, the grooming instructions were really helpful. I will keep on top of it; I groom them both every night without fail. I'm just hoping it will get easier when her puppy coat is gone!

Wow! The furminator is pretty impressive when you see it in action! I don't know if it would get through her coat though- I know she looks fairly chunky in the pics but it really is all hair- when she's wet, she looks like a whippet in a wig.

Brego is the same when he is wet I feel guilty about how skinny he is. If you oived closer I'd lend you mine.

I would never have bought one if I hadn't seen a demo of it - it was incredible.

You can get them cheaper off ebay
