Just wondering what peoples routines were, what brushes, products etc do you use to get the best results. Also is there any brushes you find your horse finds particularly relaxing to have used after a ride.

I am loving the shedding blade at the mo! It's so good I can't believe I never had one before! I also like baby wipes for an all over dust removal after brushing :-)

I'm using the shedding blade lots just now, and eating hair! Lol. Usual routine is plastic curry comb, quick flick with the dandy brush, mane and tail sprayed with detangler and brushed out every couple of days.

I take my horse to roll in the school as we have no turnout. That seems to get all the bedding off and helps her to remove a lot of the loose hair nicely. Her personal best is five turns over, which I would say isn't bad for 23.
Afterwards, she has a good shake and removes pretty much all the sand and rubber. I stand well clear for that bit.

ETA: When we get back, I pick her feet out, as she can't do that herself.

Sadly that appears to be Tommy's favourite grooming method. Sadly it isn't the cleanest. From your reply i guess he hasn't perfected the shake part.

Dandy brush all over except his poor wee face, mane or tail. The face gets a really lovely soft (goats hair?) brush that my OH gave us and feet picked out.
He lives out and is now unrugged so don't want to take away all his oils etc by using the curry comb and body brush on his body.
Mum has taken to doing his mane and tail for me on her days - she loves a good mane and tail groom does my mum :D

And at the moment my new best friend is the shedding blade! :D

Curry comb and Dandy brush (gets all the sand out as mine are out 24/7)
Body brush for face
No-nots in mane and tail before I brush both
Feet picked out
If they are super dusty then I wipe them over with a damp cloth.

I've just discovered...

MICROFIBRE CLOTHS!!!!

Dampen in warm water and wipe.

It's like a polished wooden horse. Can almost see my face!!!!

I brush Blue over most days to rid of dust / skin etc + pick out feet, but probably only decent groom once / twice a week.

Then i curry comb, body brush his coat & mane. Carefully comb tail. Quickly brush his face (he hates it! ) and comb / trim his feather etc. I like baby oil for his mane and tail - keeps the mud off and makes it silky - good as i don't like to comb him much coz it falls out :( That's pretty much the only product, apart from a wash with hibiscrub every fews weeks for his legs.

I would like to through groom more but i get distracted often just sitting in his stable reading or something :D

i have no routine! my guys live out as much as possible, except often in at night this winter and 'spring' as weather and grass still rubbish. so some times i ride a very muddy horse as if its wet its useless trying to get it off. also love shedding blade, my girl you just have to touch and a missive cloud of white fur flies off her! but mostly use a dandy brush all over, and plastic hard curry comb to do mane and tail- my boy falls asleep when i brush his tail :) i also like using the soft rubber curry comb in circular motion as a massage and to get hair off and quite good on dry mud.

Pick out feet (has to be front left, back left, back right, front right, or he gets confused :o )

Shedding blade/rubber curry comb all over for his invariably muddy neck and moulting!

Flick brush all over

Attempt to get some of the mud off his legs using whatever is handy!

Mane and tail using one of those funky hairbrushes and a squirt of mane&tail

Clean (ish) pony!

Mine get body brush all over, tails and manes sprayed and combed. Feet picked and oiled and face cleaned with a damp cloth. Eyes, nose and bum are done with baby wipes.

The hairy ones are done with a shedding blade, flick brush then tails sprayed combed and plaited up!

Feet
Furminate (if appropriate)
Catus mitt
Sheepskin mitt (optional)
Mane and tail brushing (optional)

My mare hates brushes on her body so i don't use them.

I am the queen of lick and promise grooming and have lost count of the number of times I've spotted embaressingly muddy ears half way round a hack.

Haha, this!!!! I struggle to reach ears when horse puts her head up.

Usually go in the order of.... Feet, legs, mane, tail, body, face and finished with Kevin Bacon on the feet. Sometimes skip a couple of stages, and sometimes do even more!

I have this awesome weird rubber mitt thing that's shaped differently to the standard mitts and works about a million times better. It's great for shedding, mud, pee stains etc and it's one of the few brushes my sensitive, wimp of a horse will tolerate. I think I got for like £1 years ago at some random tack shop somewhere haha! I've never seen another one anywhere!

I also love show sheen for manes and tails. You only need to apply it like once a week and tails stay all soft and and too slippy for any mud to stick too. Brilliant!

Not a routine, exactly - it depends on what we're doing, and what time of the year it is!

Winter: if unrugged (about 80% of time), remove as much mud as possible from horse using a rubber mitt, then flick as much dust off as possible, concentrating on tack areas. Mane and tail get left alone, although I will remove largeish branches if stuck :p Small twigs I leave as ornament!
if rugged, remove rug, use flick brush to get as much dust out of the coat as possible. Flick brush goes everywhere, including legs and face... he's not precious about brushes, and is not tied up to be groomed so if he didn't like it, he'd just walk off!

Spring: Use furminator/rubber mitt/damp gloves to get as much loose hair out as possible (although horse has been doing this himself over the last week in the dry as dust field). Then use flick brush to remove dust. Mane and tail are sprayed with detangler and combed through about once every two or three weeks - they stay pretty much perfect in between.

Summer: flick brush to remove mud/dust, then microfiber cloth to get last of it and make horse shiny. Mane/tail combed through occasionally.

All year round, feet cleaned, frogs sprayed etc. after ride (he's not shod).

ETA - my favourite microfiber thingy is a car wash mitt ;) It's got a sort of cloth finish on one side, and little bobbles on the other. It is amazing for removing dust and applying shine. It's one of these... http://www.screwfix.com/p/muc-off-m...tracking url&gclid=CPqG1bOQxbYCFWbKtAodkzAADg

I rarely *groom* my horse just a flick off with dandy brush or plastic curry comb to remove hair or mud.

Grooming... the process of transferring hair and dirt from the horse to the owner! :p

Mine get a cursory show of the shedding blade and/or plastic curry comb. Feet picked out and manes, tails and feathers spritzed and brushed with Canter Mane & Tail. The rest I leave to Mother Nature ;)

Ok you asked for it! I'm a slightly obsessed groomer and LOVE making him look pretty!!

Pick out feet
Wash off legs if muddy
Plastic curry comb all over
Tiny rubber curry comb on muddy face
Mane and tail with detangler if needed using mane and tail brush
soft face brush on face
baby wipes for eyes and nose
baby wipe any dust left on face
rubber curry comb rest of body
flick brush off to finish :D

and there you have it! every single day!! ha! Love making him look pretty and shiny!!

Rubber curry body, then dandy brush then body brush for about 10 mins. Spray mane and tail with no tears de tangle child's spray. Pick feet and brush legs, brush out mane and tail.

Then either wipe with baby wipe, or use a microfibre mit with coat shine on. Once a week I dry shampoo. Also clean bottom, eyes, nose with baby wipes. Also use furniture spray on mane and t.ail. takes about 25 mins I do it everyday.
