hi,
i am in the process of buying my own yard, but for financial security i am keeping my fairly well paid job so i have money coming in while im building the business, so because of this i am needing grooms.

The yard i am getting has 10 stables, and will have about 5 grass liveries too, so about 15 horses to look after. 5 stables would be my jumpers/ youngsters, the other 5 liveries.
i will be around before and after my varying shifts to help on the yard and ride and my mum also helps on the yard so they will never have to do them on their own as such.

If i had 2 grooms working 5 days a week 8.30am til 5.30pm with an hour lunch, with alternate weekends off what salary would i be looking at paying them? also they could live on site.

HELP!!! i was on rubbish money when i worked on a yard and i dont really know what the going rate is now.

IDEAS PLEASE??

thanks muchly!!

i pay my freelance-p/t live out-self employed groom £10 per hour but she'd prob work for less if did more hours.

my trainer pays her live out £6 p.h

The above is obviously good money.

I had £20 a week plus living at one place, it was experience not money I was after. And £5.00 p/hour in another...

Oh so glad my grooming days are past

Why on earth would you need TWO grooms working those hours?!

I did think that, only enough work for one surely...?

I wondered that too. Perhaps the liveries need their bottoms wiping after each poop?

im with you to definately only enough work for one !!

thats exactly what my groom does takes her about 4 hours to turn out muck out do feeds etc

then lunch then in the afternoon lunge a few, ride clean tack and general tidy up !!

about £7 an hour x

i said 2 as i there will be time when im at shows with one of them with me, also mum will be with me but she is useless at shows!! she flaps!!
so i would need someone at home with the yard.

do you think i should have one on the hours above with someone part time to cover show days then??

the liveries would be full and one of them is already a pain in the arse ( i know her!! )

also im just worried about me getting stuck somewhere as my main job i work as a flight attendant.

thanks stacey.
i am new to this and just wanted an idea of what sort of money people are on.
i personally didnt think 10 in was too much for one person but other people had me thinking i was asking slave labour so i panicked thinking i would need 2 people!!

Sounds similar to a job I'm about to take, looking after 6 full liveries and catching in about 12 assisted DIYs. The yard manager and her mum both help out every day and I'll be living in. I'll be getting £175 a week but then will have livery and accomodation costs to take out of it. YM quite often goes to shows and will take me and her mum but we'll do the yard early before we leave and then late when we get back. So I think you'l only need one full timer and then probably one part timer to cover his/her days off.

We have one full time and one part time groom to do 8 hunters and 2 competition horses. The deal with f/t groom is she does 5.5 day week by doing 6 days a week in winter six months, 5 days a week in summer 6 months, and she lives in, no bills and gets £250/week. (Yes I know I'm spoilt, but I work 3 days a week - 2hrs drive away - and OH can't cook, so he'd rather I was feeding him than feeding horses....!)

maybe a part time groom then for her half days off and w/e etc - if you go to shows then to be honest between you, the groom and your mum it would only take 2 hours to do the yard - can you not do this before you go to the show thats what we do ???
