Cool, pmsl at Mary King... best things?! Worse things?!
I "groomed" on a dressage yard (non paid) when was about 13, when they went to comps etc, then a hunting yard upto about 17, then got own ponio, and then was a WP on an eventing yard last year which was FAB. Best thing going to events, having lots of lessons, living outdoors (could go on)! Worse things being broke, very little social life, injury
I enjoyed all my horsey jobs, only left the livery / comp yard, coz they were moving away and I didnt want to move away. Then the racing yard, I loved, but got fed up with being treated like sh*t!!
Much prefer just having my horsey now, it makes him so much more special, rather than just another horse to do.

Was`Annie still with Mary when you went there?

Dont no, didnt see anyone else there when I went. I did meet King Soloman though! He was all hairy in the field, I got quite excited! And I rode 'Ryan' her horse she competed on at Blenheim the year b4.
I used to work for a breaking/schooling/selling yard type thing (my pathetic excuse for a boss liked to call it a SJ yard aswell.....ha ha ha yeah).
- Best things: Beaing able to ride such a wide variety of horses, riding things my boss either wouldn't or couldn't ride, making some good friends.
- Worst things: Still being owed £1200 in wages(!), my boss, my boss, my boss...oh...and my boss! Vile, pathetic excuse for a man!
For part of last summer I worked at a show jumping yard and it was fab
- Best things: Going to shows, seeing the horses doing well, working with some fantastic horses, Woring with the head girl (she was a right giggle), I got to play on a quad(!!!!!!), the fact that even when I broke stuff (i.e. getting the quad trailer caught on the wooden preassure washer hut thing) I didn't get bollocked for it. Lovely people!
- Worst things: Having to get up at 5am to be at work at 6am during July when it was really hot. I always woke up feeling as though I was about to shrivel up and die! I don't do really early mornings very well
From school - riding school where I had ridden since 8 years old.
live in groom/nanny - didn't like the nanny part
livery yard, mainly hunters, pointers, show hunters,
private yard, hunters and pre race youngsters,
hunters at different yards,
back to a riding school,
livery yard, all hunters, - learnt most there, still friends with the boss!
show yard with hunter youngstock, mares and foals,
polo, that was a hoot some of the time!
riding school again,.
Got married, had son then started again with pointers for 3 years,
then moved here and started with liveries, mainly hunters, mares in foal or youngsters and that's it.
Basically, 40 plus years of shovelling shite!!!!!!!!!
- but wouldn't have changed a minute of it either, I'd still do the same all over again!!
My very favourite would have to be hunters; loved the fittening work, turning them out smartly for meets then doing them off again at night and the tack cleaning too; magic days!
Nearly forgot, my wages at the first job were 30 shillings a week (£1.50 today!) Even in the 70's before I got married, my wages were only a tenner but I did get a flat, electric paid but had to buy own food and that was for 6 days, 7 to 6, more when showing/hunting! No wonder we oldies say you don't know you're born to the youngsters today!
Have done eventing with a small yard with horses up to 4*
Have done international showjumper
have done rich livery yard
By far the best was the eventing, just because I enjoy that sort of atmosphere and I was given more riding oppertunities despite the poor wages
Livery was okay, good bunch of grooms so had good social aspect, but other than that the work was very boring
Showjumping, didn't enjoy. Didn't like the way the horses were kept, didn't like who I worked with although the location, accomodation and wage was quite good.
I used to work at a stud showing yard it was brill really enjoyed it had my own shared house as well downside was i only got paid 160 every fortnight! But i was at coll so i didnt mind! loved it!
Show yard from when i was 13 up until I left college and then worked there full time.
I had the best time ever there, loved it
Not only did we have show horses, but YOs eventers and a couple of liveries who had more money than sense.
Got to ride some great horses, go to the big shows, and they would pay for us to compete on our own horses too
After that went and worked at a stud... I learnt loads, worked my t*ts off, became very ill.
I worked for a livery yard 15 - 17 mucking out and suppose to ride (I rode once)
Dealing yard 17 -20 Riding, competing, mucking out, great laugh good bunch of people though hard work, Gave up when I did back in jumping off a rodeoing horse
Worked at Liphook for 3 months - loved the variety though not so keen on some people, others were lovely
20 - Freelance groom - mainly for International eventer and also posh people
25 - went back to working at an equine vets, great job not enough money
work on a Riding school/livery/dealer yard (part time)
Best thing - teaching kids and adults, getting to ride lots of interesting horses, lots of responsibility (am alone on the yard a lot of the time), helpful knowledgable boss, being on site with my ponio when others are stuck in an office, Livery owners (the nice ones) oh and of course the SEXY farriers LOL
Worst thing - riding vile ponies that buck (or worse still, not being asked to ride at all), being left alone on the yard and not being told anything then getting yelled at when something isn't done/is done 'incorrectly', crap money, livery owners (the awful ones)... can't think of much else - I mostly love my job.
I used to work for a showjumper.
The best park would have been going to the shows and seeing all the famous riders.
Worst would be the very early mornings and late nights when at the shows, some shows were better than others, i had my faves.
I worked at showing/producing/eventing yards while i was growing up and then with dressage/eventing horses after i finished uni.
I did a stint in a jumping/backing/scooling/livery yard after that and then decided to concentrate on my own mare!
to be totally honest i did more with her after i stopped working with horses than when i was on the yard 12 hours a day! at one point i was clocking over 60 hours a week! that laves very little time for your own pony!
i found that the eventing yards were the most chilled but i really think the people you work with and what your boss is like make the biggest difference - i've worked on beautiful yards with amazing horses but if your boss is a bi*ch its still no fun!
I worked with the Shires. We were a tourist attraction but behind the scenes we had three stallions.A couple of dozen broodmares/show horses and another couple of dozen working horses and a handfull of youngsters. We done alot of showing with one of the stallions who went on to be a super premium stallion.Who was later gifted to australia to continue the breeding programe over there.A couple of the mares went on to become HOYS shire horse of the year champions.I loved every minute working with the big guys.
Dressage for an amazing lady rider still doing brilliantly today! Perks- she paid me well, secondly I learnt a lot riding her two top horses, and she trusted me to school them when she was away and to hack them etc. Also winning at the nationals etc. I loved being part of her team.
The downside, when it rains! lol I wouldn't consider it as a career, though, I am a journalist and am writing my own books now.
