Gross thread warning!! Yucky/infected sheath - any tips please?

Tbh even very diluted hibiscrub is harsh. I would never use it on his sheath.

Hibiscrub is what my vet used when we had a horse that arrived with a nasty infected sheath.

Yes that would make sense but not for routine cleaning and a gunky sheath does not necessarily mean there is an infection for some horses it's perfectly normal.

my vet reckons that you should clean a sheath monthly as the gunk and smegma can be carcinogenic -dont know about this really- would be inclined to do it when needed as some seem to stay quite clean by themselves. my new horse looked like he had dipped his dangly in cornflakes when he first came and so a good cleaning was needed and he had a huge bean!

Thanks to everyone who replied! I've given sheath a good clean and it didn't seem to be too bad. There's no more gunky stuff around it any more anyway and the minor swelling has gone down, so hoping it was just that the flies had nibbled the area. No maggots anyway thank goodness!
