George - find the chassis plate on the vehicle - there will be a list of various weights on the plate.

(depending on the car year, this info may be able to be found on the internet)

The highest is the maximum weight the the car, vehicle, contents trailer and load on trailer can weigh.

The second lowest is the maximum weight that the vehicle and contents can weigh.

The next two are weights which cannot be exceeded over each axle.

A trailer that is plated at a maximum gross weight of 3500kg is likely to weigh around 1000KG ish empty and this weight of course needs to be taken into consideration. (hence forth, the trailer can only carry 2500KG and then only if there is sufficent 'capacity' within the allowable train weight of the vehicle).

Towing more weight that the actual towing vehicle weighs can be very very dangerous and is not to be recommended.

I know the gross train weight regulations inside out virtually due to my occupation!

Hope the above helps - if you need more clarification just reply to this post.
